MORTGAGORS’ RELIEF
‘CONTRADICTORY EXPLANATION.’ LETTER FROM MINISTER. Palmertson N., May 18. A request that provision should be made in the Mortgagors’ Relief Act for mortgagors to have the right to apply to the court for further relief on account of the fall in the value of primary produce, was made to the Minister of Justice, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, at the last meeting of the Manawatu executive of the Dairy Farmers’ Union. A reply was received from the Minister at this afternoon’s meeting of the executive. In his letter* the Minister stated that provision had been made in the Act for successive applications for relief by mortgagors, by leave of the court. “I may mention," wrote the Minister, “that the Act provides that no appeal shall be made from the decision of the Supreme Court or a decision of a magistrate.” Members were of the opinion that the explanation in the latter portion of the letter contradicted the statement that successive applications were allowed.
