EDUCATION BOARD’S VISIT. SOUTH TARANAKI AREA. t In continuation of their tour inspect- ■ ing schools in South Taranaki, members t of the Taranaki Education Board yester- . day visited schools at Whareroa, Mokoia, - Whakamara, Tawhiti, Fraser Road, Ararata, Rotokare and Mata. The party, which was welcomed at the ■ various schools by the staffs and commit- ' tees, comprised Messrs. S. G. Smith, M.P. I (chairman), J. A. Valentine, H. Dempsey, i W. H. Jones, C. H. NURSE’S APRIL FIGURES. ; • Mrs. Mulholland presided at the month- ■ ly meeting of Waverley Plunket Society ■ this week. The nurse reported as follows: Babies on books, 54; older children, 30; new cases for April: Mothers 4, babies 4; : visits to homes: new, 2; old 8; visits to ■ office, 5 days, adults 54, babies 47, chil- ■ dren 12; total 113. A number of subjects came up for discussion, but were referred to the society’s next meeting. GENERAL ITEMS. 1 Cycle Road Race. The Hawera Ramblers’ Cycle Club, which is endeavouring to amalgamate with the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club, will hold the first of a series of road races on Wednesday next. The start will be from the White Hart Hotel, from whence the course will be through Normanby and Okaiawa, down Scott Road to the Main South Road, finishing at the post office. Mr. P. Linkhorn has been appointed road inspector for this race. The club has received donations from Messrs. E. C. Constant and J. Everett. Another Long Distance Tram per. Hawera, yesterday afternoon. The lightly dad one was in the course of a tramp from Spirits Bay, North Auckland, to Invercargill, having to the. time, of his arrival at Hawera spent 26 days on the road. Early Ascents of Mt Cook. The early history of attempts to climb Mount Cook was dealt with by Mr. Rod Syme in a lantern lecture to the Mount Egmont Alpine Club on Thursday. He dealt in detail with the first successful ascent in 1896 by Messrs. T. C. Fyfe, G. Graham and J. Clark, and described the ascent , made in 1930 by himself and Mr. W. G. Mace, Wellington. Young School Committee. Appreciative reference to the fact that members of the Mokoia school committee appeared to be comparatively young men was made by members of the Taranaki Education Board subsequent to their visit to the school yesterday, members remarking that it was a pleasure to see the younger men taking such an interest in educational matters. Factory Still Burning. Evidence of the extent of the recent fire • at the Ohangai dairy factory was furnished to members of the Taranaki Education Board yesterday when they were in that vicinity, the ruins of the factory still giving off dense volumes of smoke, despite the fact that rain has apparently fallen heavily in the district since the fire. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. A dance will be held in the Otakeho hall on Thursday, June 8. Details are advertised. The Hibernian annual ball will be held in St Joseph’s hall, Hawera, on Wednesday, June 28. A special talkie entertainment will be given by the Hawera Opera House Company on Sunday night commencing at 8.30 o’clock, in aid of the Hawera Citizens’ Relief Fund. The Universal drama “Mother’s Millions,” one of the outstanding successes of last year, will be screened and violin solos will be given by Mr. Rupert George. The whole of the cost of the entertainment is being borne by the Theatre Company and its staff and the gross proceeds will be donated to the fund. A Legion of Frontiersmen old-time ,

dance will be held in the Fraser Road hall on Wednesday evening next. A grand dance under the auspices of the Hawera and District Welsh Society will be held in St. Mary’s Hall, Hawera, on Friday next, June 2. Particulars are adverted.
