RATES IN PATEA BOROUGH
LAST TEAR’S AGAIN STRUCK. TURI MEMORIAL CEREMONIES. A special meeting of the Patea Borough Council was held last night, when rates for the forthcoming year were struck, no alteration to the rates at present in force being made. The Mayor (Mr. F. Ramsbottom) presided. Proposals for a programme for the unveiling of the memorial to Turi at present being erected were discussed. Representatives of the natives associated with the memorial were present. It was hoped that a ceremony appropriate to the •unique occasion could be arranged, it being anticipated that a date within the next six weeks would, be selected. The Governor-General has been asked to perform the ceremony, and Messrs. C. A. Wilkinson, W. J. Polson, S. G. Smith arid H. G. Dickie, M.’sP., and'-the Native Minister (Sir Apirana Ngata) will be invited to attend. Full advantage of the Historical significance of the ceremony will be taken by the Maoris, who have been granted permission to erect ovens near the site. The hope was expressed that a cinematographic record would be made of the proceedings.
