There was a general improvement in the tone of the market at Burnside today. In anticipation of the show week demand, farmers sent forward their best quality consignments, and butchers did not hesitate to bid for almost every lot offered. The market opened with prices for Bullocks 20s per head better than last week, but as the demand became firmer a further rise of 10s' per head was realised. Cows and heifers showed an average rise of 10s to 15s per head. The yarding numbered 300 head. Extra prune heavy bullocks sold to £ll 17s 6d; prime heavy to £9 17s Gd; medium from £7 to £8 10s; lighter sorts from £5 to £6; and unfinished from £4 to £4 10s. The proportion of . wethers was greater than usual, but more could have been offered without weakening the market. The market opened for all classes at 2s per head better than the previous sale, but even then many butchers could not obtain supplies. Keener competition about halfway through the sale brought an additional rise of 2s per head, and the sale finished strongly on that basis. Extra prime heavy show wethers sold to 28s 6d, a high price that has not been obtained at Bumside for some years. A number of pens of show wethers sold to £1 and better. The top price for ewes was 18s 6d. Prime ewes ranged from 14s to 16s. A full, yarding of 1600 lambs was of medium quality, with a few pens outstanding show lambs. Competition for the latter was keen and up to 17s 6d was realised. Export buyers operated at full late rates for all other qualities. There was a small, yarding of store cattle, including a line of well-bred three-year-old steers which sold to £3 12s 6d in sympathy with the rise in fat cattle. Prices were a shade firmer than late rates. A large entry of pigs consisted principally of porkers, very few bacon pigs being forward. Prices for the latter were firm at late rates, but owing to the over-supply porkers met a dragging sale and sold at a reduction of fully 8s per head. One or two good lines of large stores made up to 17s 6d. VVAIRARAPA PRICES. FIRM SALE AT MASTERTON. Masterton, May 24.
