i — “HARD UP” DANCE SUCCESS. The Niho Niho hall was a scene of gaiety when the young ladies held a “hard-up” dance. The majority of the dancers came in “hard up” costumes, some affording much amusement. The hall was . tastefully decorated and with excellent music by Mrs. Wagstaff's orchestra the evening went with a swing. The prizes for the best ‘'hard up” costumes were won by Miss I. Bruce and Mr. Ted -Christensen. Miss I. Bruce,' partnered by Mr. P. Jorgensen, also won the novelty dance. Mr. K. Cameron gave an exhibition of a modern step dance. Messrs. T. Bell and W. M. Landy played extras. This is the first dance for some time at which an outside orchestra has been engaged and the appreciation of the music was apparent throughout the evening.

Football Competitions. The Niho Niho senior football team played Heao on the Niho Niho grounds on Saturday and was defeated by 8 points to 3. The game was fast and open. It was considered by the spectators one 8f the best games seen on the ground. Heao had a strong line of backs, Sullivan making brilliant breaks. R. Weinberg for Niho Niho also made some determined runs, but his men failed to back him. S. Morgan for Niho Niho was unlucky when the ball hit the crossbar from a drop kick. The teams were fairly evenly matched but Heao’s speed won the match.. Heao’s points were gained by a try by Sullivan, converted by T. Ratani and a try by I. Littlewood. Niho Niho’s three points were gained from a penalty kick by R. Weinberg. Tokirima juniors- had a win over the Niho Niho juniors by three points to nil. This also was an enjoyable game, it being fast and snappy. The championshin points for the seniors now stand: Heao 5, Matiere 4, Niho Niho 2, Ohura L The juniors’ points are: Niho Niho 4, Tokirima 4, .Matiere 2,.Ohura 0. Next Saturday will see the commencement of the second round for the banner. Niho Niho seniors and juniors will play Ohura at Ohura while Niho Niho third grade will play Ohura High School, the first game of the season. Ladies’ Basketball.

The Niho Niho ladies played their first friendly basketball match against Heao on Saturday on the Niho Niho school court. The points were 4 to 2 in favour’ of Heao/ After the match both teams retired to the showgrounds, where afternoon tea was provided. The following team represented Heao: Misses Ursula Duggan (capt.), Evelyn Leach, Lucy Marsh, Pearl Gallagher, Violet Parsons, Elsie Leach, Dorothy Parsons', Theda Duggan, Gladys Parsons. The Niho Niho teamcomprised Misses May Weinberg (capt.), Mary Howe, Pearl Dougherty, Mavis B.yar», Evelyn Weinberg, Connie Kelly, < Ruth Field, Sylvia Weinberg, Marion Beaton. Mrs. W. M. Landy refereed. School Football The following school Rugby fixtures have been made for next Saturday: Matiere to play Heao at Ohura, Ohura A to play Ohura B at Ohiira, Niho Niho a bye. The basketball fixtures are the same as for Rugby. Card Evenings Popular. The popularity of the euchre and bridge evenings held every Saturday at Niho Niho was shown by the record attendance of over 100 last Saturday evening. There ‘ were visitors from Otangaiwai and Turoto. Mrs. R. Weinberg captured the ladies’ prize, Rosie Tahu winning the consolation prize. Messrs. J. Gadsby, W. Wallace and H. Julian cut for ; the men’s prize and Mr. W. Wallace was the lucky one, while M. Kelly was awarded the consolation prize. Items were given by Messrs. W. MacClure and T. Chell. Supper was served, followed by dancing. Messrs. T. Bell and W. M. Landy play-' ed for the dances.
