NEW ZEALAND MINTING

OPEN TENDERS SUGGESTED. By Telegraph—Press Association. . Wellington, Last Night. Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., stated in an interview to-day that he had always supported the idea that New Zealand should mint its own silver coinage. He trusted the Government would not have this work done overseas when it could be performed in New Zealand. With such enormous profit, said Mr. Samuel, it would be nothing short of iniquitous to let the contract outside the Dominion. In any case the question should be one open to tender, and in the event of a New Zealand firm not being successful the reasons should be made public. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce decided to-night to support the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association in pressing the Government to give New Zealand firms an opportunity of tendering for the contact to mint silver coinage.
