Acknowledging congratulations on the fact that New Zealand was now to have its own silver coinage, Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., wrote to the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night saying that it was pleasing to know that New Zealand would now (“if the business were properly managed”) receive the whole of the large profit to be made in the manufacture of silver money. He'.said a further Bill dealing with the matter would be placed before Parliament when it met, and the question would again be open for discussion. He thanked . the chamber for its appreciation of the active interest he had taken in the subject, and added that it seemed strange. that, although he had submitted two Bills to the House on the question, such an obvious reform had been so long delayed.

The Ball Hut on the Tasman Glacier, for years a sufficient but rather humble mountain shelter for climbers, is, because of the growth in ski-ing on the glacier, being greatly enlarged, and renamed the Tasman Chalet. There will be accommodation for 100 people at the chalet. A drying-room, a ski room, and improved kitchen arrangements, are being provided, and there will be dining accommodation for 70 people at a time. The chalet is being equipped with water tanks of 6000 gallons total capacity, and there will be proper basins for washing purposes. The Mt. Cook Tourist Company has obtained a caterpillar tractor with a snow-plough, and by this means the road between the Hermitage and the Tasman Chalet will be kept clear of snow, so that guests at the Hermitage will be able to drive out to the chalet after breakfast, and return in the same evening, after watching or participating in, the sports.
