SUCCESS IN SPORTS ACTIVITIES. COMMITTEE PRESENTS REPORT. The Matapu householders’ meeting was. presided over by Mr. A. J. Prestidge, there being an attendance of 16. . The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l6 3s sd. The chairman reported that the year commenced with a roll of 93 and an average attendance was 85.7. For the second term the roll was 94 while the average was 84 and in the third term 95 and 85.6,, making an average attendance for the year of 86. This year the first term started with a roll num-, ber of 90. Owing to the possibility of the school falling a grade the committee offered prizes for regular attendance with the result that 16 scholars made the possible attendance and received prizes, while 23 qualified for regular attendance certificates. The inspector’s report was most satisfactory. Seven children gained proficiency certificates and one competency. There were only four scholars who failed to be promoted. The dental clinic nurse is still doing good work. The football team again won the group competition ’ but was beaten m the final play-off. The basketball team had a successful season, winning a fair percentage of matches. Mrs. O’Sullivan donated two trophies for the boys’ and girls’ handicaps singles tennis competition, which were won by Barbara Alexander and John Foreman. At the South Taranaki primary school sports the school won the Bennett and Sutton Shield. It is the eighth time in nine years that the school has won the Bennett and Sutton trophies. An operetta was produced at a concert in September and the profits were used to buy a gramophone for the school. Later the school combined with Okaiawa at a concert held there and the profits were used to buy a cricket set. The annual picnic was held at Opunake. A. motion that the school open at 9 a.m. instead of 9.30 during the winter months was defeated after a long discussion. The chairman called the attention of the householders to the fact that if the attendance was not kept up it would mean that the school would go down a grade and lose a. teacher and a room would have to be closed.
