DREADFUL HOURS IN GAOL

ENGINEER’S EXPERIENCES MONKHOUSE TELLS STORY THOUGHT OF TARANAKI IMPRESSIONS OF RUSSIA By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, April 29. “During the dreadful hours in the Luibanka gaol I many times wondered whether I would see my home town in Taranaki again,” Mr. Allan Monkhouse told a Sun Service representative. Mr. Monkhouse, who was one of the six British engineers charged by the Soviet with sabotage and espionage, was ordered to leave Russia. He is a son of the late Mr. William Monkhouse, of Lowgarth, Stratford, and Mrs. Monkhouse, of Worcestershire, England, who is visiting New Zealand at present. “During the O.G.P.U.’s tedious; interrogation I promised myself that if I ever escaped I would return to Taranaki,” he said,” but now I doubt whether I will be able to go.” Mr. Monkhouse added that , from the viewpoint of engineering experience Russia was remarkable. The work there was unusually interesting. The Russian workmen were inexperienced, but they were very keen when encouraged,: while the enormous industries were amazing. “I do not advise Dominion engineers to visit Russia,” he said, “but the experience there is invaluable. There ' are several Australians and New Zealanders holding responsible jobs in Russia, but they are paid in roubles, which must be spent there as they are not transferable.”
