RESIDENT ASSASSINATED
GENERAL CERRO OF PERU GUARDS KILL MURDERER SUDDEN SHOOTING ATTACK PRECAUTIONS UNAVAILING By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rer. 5.5 p.m. Lima (Peru), April 30. President Luis Fanchez Cerro was shot and killed to-day. He was fatally wounded by bullets when leaving the race track at Santa Beatriz, dying later. General Oscar Benavides was to-night chosen President General Cerro had been President since December, 1931. He was assassinated soon lifter he had reviewed a parade of 20,000 young men in Jorgechavez Park. The assassin, Ahelardo Demendoza, fired several shots Ihto General Cerro’s body as the executive party started to drive away from the park. The killer was then himself slain by Presidential guards. The attack was so sudden that the elaborate precautions to protect the President’s life were unavailing.
