Can handle weight and is a great mudlark. Should make good as a hurdler. Ganpat: Made an auspicious start by winning at his first attempt as a jumper at Stratford. Should be improved as a result of that experience. Invictus: Was second at Marton last week. Won at Hawera at the February meeting. Sir Red: Has done nothing to show that he has a winning chance here. Telegraph Hack. Cereal: A smart sort Has been out of a place only once in his nine starts this season. Slippery: Has been a consistent performer in Hawke’s Bay. Failed at Marton, but should do better here. Lapstone: Has filled minor places on several occasions of late. Turn cannot be far off. Was second to Callamart at Marton and is expected to win a big race this winter. Jayson: Made debut over big fences at Marton, finishing third. Promising sort. , Ward Gold: Won good races on Hawke s Bay circuit last season. Led most of way in last Wellington Steeples. More than useful when in form. Jen: Showed- good form two or three seasons ago, but has done nothing to enthuse over since. Fine Acre: A very promising sort two seasons ago when he looked like reaching top class. Showed some form at Marton. Was once reported dead, but survived the rumour. Day Lass: Just a plodder who stays on. Flying

Lady Quex:’A great sprinter, but getting on in years. Ran fine race in Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. Does not handle heavy going. All Humbug: More than useful when right. Failed at Feilding but won well just previously at Stratford. Awaken: Has not shown true form this season. Good on soft track. Royal Bengal: A very unlucky horse this season. Well handicapped and in good order. At home on a wet track. ' British Columbia. Ran splendid races at Ellerslie and Avondale. Much improved sort. Arvada: Won well at Marton. Has done well since. The Tiger: The hack boom of last season. Has done very little racing for some time. Very speedy.. Little Doubt: Has not been up long. Will be all the better for the race. Green Linnet: Very fast when in the mood, but unreliable. Monaloff: Went well at Opunake, but her form this season has not been impressive. Hack Scurry.

Beacon Fire: A stablemate of Golden Wings. A. really good hack but'has been off the scene for some time. Can handle heavy going. Merry Way: Will probably start in six furlongs event. . * Instalment: Has won only one hack race, but has been running prominently among the open sprinters. Miss Cavendish: Gallops brilliantly in private. Was backed at Feilding, but suffered interference during running. Forceful: Ran one good race, at Opunake. Was tried- over a distance. at Stratford, but is back among the sprinters here. King Peg: Can muster up a fine turn of speed, but has not done a great deal lately. La Crown: See Telegraph Hack. Willowmere: Has few minor placings to his credit. Arastar: Has shown pace, but only a moderate. Moatoa: Once a good sort, but has slipped badly. Diagano: Has had only one race, but has been working well at Hawera. Sub-Station: Has shown pace in hack events in Auckland province. Amyril: Well-bired and showed distinct promise as a two-year-old. First start for over 12 months. Huanui: Has galloped well on the tracks at- times. Mcßae Handicap. Seatown: A great old battler who revels ih the heavy going. Ran a good race at Ellerslie. . . Aga Khan: Punters will expect he is going to start only when he parades in the cage. A good sort, who ran two solid races at Ellerslie. . Carfex: A more than useful three-year-old. Won President’s Handicap at Ellerslie in good style at his last start. Gibraltar: A good horse when right. Handled the soft going in good fashion the second day at Te Aroha. Alloy: A much-raced but hardy sort. Went well at Avondale. ‘March -Alone: Has run some really good races, but usually unlucky. Is also in the hack seven furlongs. Tawhiti Hack. Fairway: Won at Feilding like a good one. Being by Catmint should revel in « heavy track. King Win: Also won at Feilding. Inability to start quickly has spoiled his chances on several occasions. Attentive: Has failed since winning a double at Opunake, but has been working well on the track. Beaconsfield: • Showed good form at Christmas but has disappointed since then. Illuminate: Has been racing well but unluckily, especially at the Stratford meeting. His turn must come soon. March Alone: See Mcßae Handicap.

Glowlight: Will probably find the distance too short. Lalla Quex: Won well at Awapuni, but has failed since. Tentcall:- Easily the best handicapped, being remarkably well treated. Has been galloping in great style on the tracks. Pango: An untried maiden. St. Clara:. Another maiden. Has usually been finishing on in all her races. HAWE'RA TRACK WORK RAIN SOFTENS THE GOING. v FEW SCRATCHINGS EXPECTED. Steady rain hampered track work at Hawera yesterday.' All the galloping was done on the course proper with the pegs the usual distance out. The rain seems to have set in and if the going to-morrow is not actually heavy it should be at least soft. Although there was not a great deal of galloping yesterday the course was beginning to cut up towards the end of the proceedings. Most of the visitors who have not arrived are due to-day, and very few scratchings are anticipated. Final gallops will be staged to-day. The only one to work before breakfast was Davistock, who was exercised on the two-year-old track. The same track was used by W., H. Maria, who was first out after breakfast with Alloy and British Columbia., The latter was sent out of the barrier on Sunday. Carfex (Vaughan) and Awaken (Feasey) did not have a great deal of pace on over the first three furlongs of a mile, but ran home the last five in Im. 9 3-ss. Carfex had a little in hand and hit out attractively. Chief Link (W. Grindley) was put over a couple of fences and later galloped a mile alone. He worked freely but was not asked to go fast. There was nothing between Slippery (Stratton) and St. Clara (Sheild) at any part of five furlongs in Im. 7 l-ss. St. Clara is coming to hand well but Slippery was her a good deal of weight. The Hunting Song hack certainly goes fast, but is rather close to the smart Taranaki performers Cereal and Merry Way and should be fully tested to-morrow. Green Linnet (W. Grindley)’ was sent over three fences. She rapped each one and did not give as good a display as she did on Thursday. Hard Gold (C. Stratton) schooled well over four steeplechase fences. The double was not up but he jumped the others in good style. On Sunday morning Lapstone (W. E. i me) reeled off half a mile in 53 3-ss.— a good effort. The track was fairly fast, however, as the weather did not break until that night. Lapstone will have the services of H. Wiggins and should give a good account of himself, although he is engaged in the hardest field of the day, the Hack Scurry. Pace work was evenly divided between the two-year-old track and the inside plough. The latter was rather heavy but most of the local trainers preferred it to the two-year-old track, which is beginning to show signs of the large amount of use it has had of late. Those to go on the inside plough were Chief Line, Attentive, Haunui, La Crown, Tentcall, March Alone, Copey, Gibraltar, Iceir and Diagano. On the two-year-old track Little Doubt, Aga Khan, Alloy, Round Table, British Columbia, Lapstone, King Win, Jen and Lalla Quex were alloted useful exercise. The Tiger was restricted to very light work on the hurdle track. Rain continued throughout the day and mudlarks should be in evidence to-mor-row.
