CONCLUSION OF DOG TRIALS

WADDELL WINS HEAD AND YARD. HUNTAWAY GOBS TO L. MUNRO. The Eitham-Takou dog trials were concluded at Mangamingi yesterday, when the head and yard and the huntaway events were decided. The heading event was won by F. Waddell’s Victoria, with R. Stevenson’s Dean second, T. L. Reilly’s Nigger third and I*. Munro’s Glen fourth. The huntaway went to L. Munrtrs Bob, L. Gower’s Chep being second, H. V. Gower’s Chum third and W. V, McIntyre’s Bruce fourth. The weather for the three days was ideal and this contributed largely to the success of the events. Both socially and financially the results were gratifying. The sheep used were placed at the disposal of the committee by Messrs. Brown Bros, and Mr. W. Hardwick Smith. At the conclusion the trophies and prizes were presented by the president, Mr. H. V. Gower, who referred the excellent weather for the trials. The temperature had been very even and had given all competitors an even chance. The standard of work of the young shepherds had been very good and the prizes had been well distributed. Next year would see the 21st trials, and he promised all competitors a good time. The judge, Mr. A. Walker, congratulated the club on its successful trials. He said the course was one of the best he had been on and he thanked the competitors for accepting his decisions in a good sporting spirit Cheers were given for the judge and secretaries and other officials. In the sheep-guessing contest there was a tie between W. Mitchell, A. Tiplady and C. Paterson, each estimating the correct weight, 113Jlb. The ladies’ sheep-guessing was won by Mrs. H. R. Scott first and Mrs. P. R. Brown second, the respective prizes being donated by Mr. J. Petrie, and Mr. L. Bluett The nail-driving competition was won by Mr. B. Newland (men’s) and Mrs. Treweek (ladies’). The catering for the trials was carried out by Mr. J. Bates. Special prizes were awarded as follows: McLeary, Duff and Co.’s Cup, presented by A. O. Casey, for maiden dog: H. V. Gower.

Takou - Matemateaonga Memorial Shield, for local teams’ prize, one dog in class 1 and one dog in class 3: A. Doole, 78 points.

R. J. Knuckey Silver Cup, for scoring most points in class 1: A. Doole’s Boy, 45 points.

Matemateaonga Silver Cup, for dog scoring most points in classes 1 and 2: R. Stevenson, 94 points. Levin and Co.’s Silver Cup, for local dog scoring most points in classes 1 and 2: T. Reilly, won outright, 90 points. J. B. Dunn Cup, for best local maiden dog in classes 1 and 2: J. Gear’s Bell, 59 points. Mr. C. C. Stanners’ special for maiden huntaway: H. V. Gower. Class 3, Scott Bros.’ Cup: L. Munro.

Mr. J. Best’s special, for the youngest placed shepherd: W. Doole. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson’s trophy, for dog making the best head (open): W. Doole’s May, 16£ points. Eltham Motors’ special, for local man and dog scoring most points at yard: T. Reilly. Mr, Newland’s special, for best local maiden man and dog: H. V. Gower. Mr. A. Gower’s weather glass, for dogs scoring most points in classes 2 and 3: L. Munro’s Bob and Glen. Mr. H. V. Gower’s special, for dog that has never won an open event at a sheep dog trial, and scores the best percentage points in any one of the open events: H. V. Gower’s Chum. Mr. Gavigan’s special, for local shepherd scoring the most points in class 1: A. Doole. Mr. C. A. Belcher’s trophy, for maiden dog scoring most points in classes 1 and 2: L. Munro and ,F. Waddell, tie, 82 points. Mr. P. Marchant’s trophy, runner-up to Matemateaonga Cup: T. Reilly. Loan and Mercantile Co.’s box of tea, to novice scoring most points in class 1: W. Doole. Wright, Stevenson’s box of tea, to novice scoring most points in class 2: A. Hopkins. Mr. E. Clare’s special, to youngest competitor scoring 10 points or more in any event: A. Hopkins. Mr. E. Forrester’s Cup, points prize, in classes A, 1 and 2, for man who has never won at open event: J. Gear’s Bell, 104 points. Mr. H. McWilliam’s teams’ prize, 1 heading dog, 1 huntaway, for all residents over Patea River: L. Gower and A. Doole, tie, 112 points. Mr. M. Bridger’s special, for novice scoring most points in classes A and 1: B. Babbs.

Wilson and Mr. W. Boddie. A tap dance and a skipping dance were given by Miss E. Newland. Mr. A. Walker, the judge at the trials, performed a step dance. Mr. Dick Silver played the accompaniments and the Adelphi orchestra played for the dances. Extras were contributed by Messrs. A. Wilson and D. Silver. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr. C. Behl and Miss Renai. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs. P. R. Brown and E. Newland. The supper arrangements were carried out by Mr. J. Bates.
