MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

RUMOUR ALREADY BUSY. LABOUR “TICKET” TALKED OF. Rumour has been busy in New Plymouth iately x concerning the municipal elections on May 3. It is understood that there will be a Labour “ticket” and that the recently-formed Central Ratepayers’ Association, while not actually sponsoring a “ticket,” will co-operate with the suburban associations in supporting candidates considered to be sound and reliable. Mr. R. J. Pentecost will probably be leaving New Plymouth shortly and he will not be a candidate for his seat on the council. That is the only definite news about the intentions of the present members of the council. Several men have been mentioned by those discussing aspirants for seats, and the Mayoralty has also been the subject of some speculation. The election will affect the borough representatives on the New Plymouth Harbour Board and the Taranaki Hospital Board. Messrs. C. E. Bellringer (chairman) and J. H. H. Holm at present represent, New Plymouth on the Harbour Board and Mr. D. J. Malone sits for the Stratford, Eltham and Inglewood boroughs. These are the only members of the board who will be concerned with the election.

The Rev. R. B. Gosnell, chairman of the Hospital Board, will not seek reelection owing to his impending removal from New Plymouth to Hastings. Mr. Gosnell first joined the board 17 years ago, and during that period he has been a member for terms aggregating between nine and ten years. This is his second appointment as chainnan. Originally he represented the Egmont county and later the Waitara borough. For the past five years, with the exception of an interval of eight or nine months, he has been one of the members for the New Plymouth borough. The other New Plymouth members are Messrs. E. R. J. Gilmour, R. J. Deare and J. Brown. It is understood they will be candidates.
