NORFOLK ANNUAL SHOW

EXHiBITS OF A WIDE VARIETY OUTSTANDING SUCCESS ACHIEVED. STRIKING DISPLAY OF HANDWORK. With the quality of the exhibits, especially of the flowers, easily eclipsing those of previous years, the annual school and district show which was held at Norfolk Road yesterday was an outstanding success. The schedule was of a very comprehensive nature, catering for every section of the community and for young and old. The show was held in the school building. The quality of the cut bloom classes was higher than fn previous years, said Mr. V. C. Davies, New Plymouth,. the judge of the cut' blooms and decorative sections. Mr. Davies commented favourably on the hydrangea class, won by Miss E. Trimble. The quality of all the entries was very good. The class for decorative dahlia was strong both in the number and quality of the entries. The three.blooms displayed by Mrs. L. Brown were beautiful exhibits. The collection of asters was the strongest exhibit in the show in the opinion of Mr. Davies. The standard of the entries was very even and caused him great difficulty in separating the prizewinners, Mr. F. Jans and Mesdames Surrey and Utting. The verbenas, in which Miss J. Hunter was first, were all excellent blooms and little separated Mesdames S. Walker and L. D. Brown from the winner. Entries in the other sections for farm and garden produce, home industries and fancy work were well up to standard both in number and in quality. In some cases entries were slightly fewer than in previous years but the judges were unanimous in their opinion that the quality of the' exhibits was higher than before. The school classes provided some of the most interesting classes, of the show. It was astonishing to think that the handicrafts of the children could fashion such well made and useful articles from all sorts of odds and ends such as rushes gathered on the beach, motor tubes or old sacks. They were not perfect, said the head teacher, Mrs. W. Whitaker, who with her assistant, Miss M. Leach, was in charge of the exhibits, but to the unskilled eye many of the exhibits appeared to be splendid work for small hands. . UTILITY CREATIONS. Large darning baskets, complete with’ lids, and open-work baskets with handles, all lined with softly padded materials, were -woven' very inexpensively from rushes gathered on the New Plymouth foreshore and bound together with raffia, the only component that had to be bought. Toys which were very good semblances of horses and rabbits were made from rubber sown with strong thread. Belts and ornamented polish and brush holders were more useful articles made from the same material. Sacking was fashioned without much cost into bags of all descriptions ornamented with wool patterns. The exhibits all went to show the practical value of the handwork taught in the Schools of to-day. ' Another interesting exhibit was that by the combined pupils of one of the standards, who had been .investigating the life of the Maori before he came into contact with the white civilisation. The methods of the manufacture of Maori clothing, from the raw fibre through the stages of its preparation to the woven article of clothing had been collected from Maoris and were set out with explanations. The various foods of the Maori were also displayed with a note explaining their preparation. Other pupils had collected Maori tools, bark from which dyes were manufactured and. Kauri gum. • An insect case was exhibited by, the pupils of another standard,. who had contrived a glass-sided case with a perforated lid within which .were, all manner of insects, thoroughly at home in thick grasses. The agricultural side of the school work was not neglected and there were many exhibits of grasses and grass seeds. Splendid collections of large-sized potatoes illustrated the varying success obtained with different fertilisers, notable results being obtained - from the use of ensilage. Sideshows were conducted in the school grounds and races were held for the children. There was also a sheep weight-guessing competition. A basketball match was played between Kalmata Old Girls and .Norfolk Road Old Girls, Kaimata being successful by nine to six. Mrs. W. Brown was the referee. The president of the show is Mr. H. Trimble. The chairman and secretary of the show committee, on whom fell the burden of the organisation, are Messrs. W. J. Byrne and L. D. Brown respectively. Mr. Brown was assisted by Mr. W. Stephens. “Among the stall-holders and other helpers were: Afternoon tea, Mesdames W. Byrne, A. Reardon, W. Ward; produce and sweets, Norfolic Women’s Institute, Misses N. Porter, M. Reeve, E. Kaye; guessing competitions, Mr. J. Brown, Miss Nyla Walker; side-shows, Messrs. M. Burgess, C. Comey, J. Cuthbert; children’s races, Messrs. A. Lawrence, A. Reardon, L. Whitaker, W. Marshall; doorkeeper, Mr. J. Reid. New varieties of dahlias and polyanthus roses formed the main feature of a trade display by Duncan and Davies Ltd., New Plymouth. A dance was held in the school building In the evening when the exhibits were cleared away after the conclusion of

the show. The prizes were presented by Mr. H. Trimble, who complimented the winners on their success and the exhibitors generally and the show committee on the splendid display that had resulted from their efforts in arrangement and in preparing and sending in entries. The Norfolk Rose Bowl, presented several years ago for competition in the cut blooms classes and awarded as a pointe prize over all classes, was presented by Mr. Trimble for the last time Miss E. Trimble having won it outright. Music for the dancing was played by Mrs. Trass and Mr. W. J. Byrne was master of ceremonies.
