MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE

PROBLEMS OF UNEMPLOYMENT. QUESTIONS OF AMALGAMATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Rotorua, Last Night. The New Zealand municipal conference concluded here to-day after dealing with over 100 remits. It was decided to ask for a new town planning Act consistent with the English Act and in conformity with the wishes of the Town Planning Board; that all meat brought into a borough be taken to an appointed place for inspection, except meat slaughtered where there is a Government inspector; also that all meat supplied to restaurants and boarding-houses be slaughtered under inspection. A lengthy discussion took place on unemployment, when it was decided to ask the Unemployment Board to supply more information concerning its finance. A motion calling for the raising of a compulsory internal loan to provide relief of unemployment at a living wage was defeated but a committee was set up to inquire into Unemployment Board methods, to see if better schemes could be evolved and to consult with the board, also that strong representations be made to the board to do away with the stand-down week during the winter and place country workers on the same basis as city workers. An amendment of the Valuation of Land Act was asked for so thst no more than 20 acres of land belonging to any society should be subject to remission of a proportion of the rates. The election of officers resulted: President, Mi'. T. C. A. Hislop (Mayor of Wellington), vice-presidents, Messrs. T. Jackson (Rotorua), G. W. Hutchison (Auckland), D. G. Sullivan (Christchurch), R- S. Black (Dunedin) and N. G. Armstrong (Whangarei); executive, Messrs. T. Jordan (Masterton), F. D. Pinfold (Hamilton), W. F. Stilwell (Mt. Albert), C. E. Taylor (Feilding), W. H. Woods (Ashburton), E. A. Leaver (New Brighton), J. C. Allum (Auckland Transport Board). W. J. Nicholson (Papatoetoe Town Board) and A. A. Liddell (Otautau Town Board).
