TARANAKI COUNTY RATES

AMOUNT OF COLLECTION TO DATE 17J PER CENT. STILL OUTSTANDING. Of rates totalling about £21,265 levied by the Taranaki County Council, £17,523 14s has been collected. The amount of £3741 6s 7d, or 17 J per cent, of the amount struck, remains outstanding. Last year the council levied rates totalling £20.576 and all was collected at due date with the exception of £1673 10s 3d. The fact that the amount levied this year : s greater than in the previous year is accounted for by the fact that there was no harbour rate twelve months ago. The council, however, in order to meet its ratepayers as much as possible itself carried the major portion of the harbour rate by reducing the amount of its rates so that it carried all the harbour rate with the exception of about £7OO. In view of all the circumstances the council has done well to have collected its rates with the exception of £3700. The position is not nearly as satisfactory as twelve months ago, but then the Government gave a rebate of 121 per cent, on all rates paid at due date, which was a big incentive to ratepayers.
