OPUNAKE HIGH SCHOOL

SUPPORT OF RAHOTU DISTRICT. RELATIONS OF COMMITTEES. The Opunake school committee met on Thursday. Present: Messrs W. Sharrock, W. D. Richards, L. Brown, S. Boyd

(secretary) and the headmaster, Mr. W. H. Burgess. Mr. Richards was appointed chairman for the meeting. Mr. Brown was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the Rev. Fletcher. The headmaster reported that the roll numbers were: Primary 180, average attendance 166, secondary 39, average attendance 38. Mr. A. Bain, senior inspector, visited the school on ' February 24. The erection of the ponga fence was proceeding satisfactorily and should be completed next week. Satisfactory work was being done. Two broken windows were replaced uring the week. The agricultural instructor advised treating the lawns with a light dressing of sulphate of ammonia.

The secretary of the Rahotu School committee (Mr. W. Waswo) forwarded a letter stating that his committee took exception to the Opunake School committee’s reference to Rahotu as published in the Daily News, ‘‘that the school (high school) has apparently lost the support of the Rahotu district as no pupils have entered from that district for the last two years.” The inference was, it was stated, that the Rahotu district was boycotting the Opunake High School. Such was far from being the case. The Rahotu committee sympathised with the Opunake committee in the difficult position regarding roll numbers. The facts were that one pupil did enter and five others would have entered if

it had not been for the depression. The chairman said no intentional slur was cast on the Rahotu committee. The secretary was instructed to write thanking the Rahotu committee for its assurance of sympathy and that no reflection was intended >

The Education 80~ ’s consent is to be asked for a school holiday on March 17. The secretary was authorised to write to the board pointing out the inefficient heating at the high school and to request than an improvement be ef*> kfected./'
