NEW PLYMOUTH ITEMS

Mrs. George Stephenson, Frankleigh Park, left on Thursday on a visit to Auckland and Tauranga.

Mrs. Rex Brewster has returned from a visit to Palmerston North and Feilding.

Mrs. K. Roskruge and Miss Norah Dempsey returned on Wednesday evening from a trip to Russell. Mrs. Len Randell, who has been visiting Mrs. Harold Johnson, returns tomorrow to Te Puke, Tauranga .

Mrs. McLean, who has been staying at, Marsland View, has returned to Wanganui.

Mrs. G. Duncan, Dunedin, who has been visiting New Plymouth, left yesterday for Auckland.

Miss N. Carter has returned to Hastings after a visit to New Plymouth.

Mrs. Evans and Miss J. Evans, Hawera, are spending a holiday at New Plymouth.

Dr. Mary Champtaloup has arrived to take up her duties at New Plymouth and is staying at the White Hart. Miss Jessie Home and Miss Rata Whitton returned on Wednesday from a short stay at Wanganui.

Hamerton leaves to-day for Wellington to meet Mrs. Noel Robertshaw (nee Nancy Wilson), who arrives at Wellington to-morrow by the Tainui from London.

Scanlan, Vogeltown, have left on a tour of the North Island, and will leave by the Niagara for-Vancouver on March 7. Sir James Parr, Leader of the Legislative Council, having received word of the illness of Lady Parr in Melbourne, left Wellington on Saturday for Auckland to connect with the liner Mariposa, which left on Monday for Sydney.

Mrs. Dorsch, mother of ■ the latest South Australian Rhodes Scholar, may claim distinction through her children to an unusual degree. Widowed when the youngest of her family of eight children was only five years old, she taught languages and has for many years been teacher of Greek and Latin to students for the Lutheran ministry. Her four sons and four daughters have all earned for themselves-free places at the University of Adelaide. Miss M. Robson, Auckland, was a visitor to Marsland View, New Plymouth, during the week. Mrs. J. Qualtrough (Hamilton), Mrs. C. W. Jeans (Auckland), Mrs. W. B. Hodson (Lower Hutt), Mrs. J. T. Hunter (Wellington) and Mis. E. H. Thorpe (Napier) are guests at Marsland View. Mrs. D. Deighton returned on Thursday from a motor trip to Rotorua, Napier and Palmerston North. Mrs. G. Champion is visiting Wanganui.

MOTHERS’ UNION.

The first annual meeting of the St. Mary’s branch of the Mothers’ Union was held on Wednesday. Archdeacon Gavin presided, 30 members being present. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officrs were reelected: Mrs. Lysons, enrolling member; Miss Stead, elected member; Miss Allen, honorary secretary and treasurer.

Archdeacon Gavin suggested that a list be made of members who would visit any sick members of the union, either in hospitals or in their homes. Those present gave their names. It was decided to alter the day of corporate communion from the first Friday in the month to the Friday immediately following the Wednesday meeting.

TARATA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

The monthly meeting of the Tarata Women’s Institute was held in the domain on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Hallett (president) presided and a very enjoyable time was spent. The competition which Mrs. Press had arranged, and for which she donated the prize, was won by Mrs. Hallett. The hostesses were Mesdames King, Hallett, Hockley and Rose.
