BRASS AND PIPE BANDS

the NEW ZEALAND CONTESTS.

ST. JOSEPH’S ORPHANAGE SUCCESS

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The New Zealand band contest commenced yesterday afternoon at the Carisbrook ground under excellent conditions and before a very large attendance numbering about 7000. The afternoon was occupied with the C grade brass bands’ quickstep and the Highland pipe bands’ quickstep, four bands coming forward for the former event and five for the latter. The feature of the afternoon was the outstanding excellence of St. Joseph’s Orphanage Band in winning the brass bands’ event by a very fair margin. The marching of the band was extremely creditable and playing of the selection was decidedly good. The marching by the various pipe bands was of a high standard except in minor points. The dressing was at times a little faulty and the covering was not always good. Most of the bands showed creditable steadiness and cleanliness of instruments. In the brass bands’ event the drum-majors appeared to lack finish, but this was less noticeable in the case of the pipe bands. The results are:—• BRASS BANDS’ QUICKSTEP. C Grade (own choice). In the evening the own choice selections for pipe bands and C grade brass bands was judged, the same bands coming forward as in the afternoon. The judge said he disliked the choice of music generally in both brass band events. The winning band, St. Joseph’s Orphanage, stood out as the most refined and tuneful combination, the chief feature being the playing of the bass section. The soloists for the most part were on the poor side. The results were;— C GRADE BRASS BANDS. (Own Choice Selection.)
