TARANAKI POWER BOARD

PROTEST AT BENZINE TAX. TOTAL OF £3OO PER ANNUM. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Power Board was held yesterday, there being present Messrs. H. G. Carman (chairman), C. Foreman, J. Dobson, R. J. Knuckey, C. E. McGuinness, M. J. Gemhoefer, H. J. Marchant and N. H. Moss. The engineer, Mr. B. H. Goldsmith, reported that the number of consumers at January 31 was 2196. Units generated during the month totalled 886,000. The largest daily output was 30,100 units on January. 13. The maximum demand of 1800 k.w. occurred on the same day. Installations connected were as . follow, figures for the corresponding period last year being given in parentheses: Milking motors 3 (0), other motors 1 (4), stoves 0 (1), water heaters 1 (2), pumps 0 (2), lighting and heating (new 1 (1), lighting and heating (add.) 4 (7). At the Mangaotea Cut the moving of the winch and sluicing equipment to the new location was completed and steady progress had been made since that date. The financial statement showed receipts amounting to £4140 13s. 9d. and accounts for payment £983 Ils. 9d. The debit balance at the last meeting was £BOl os. Bd. and the present balance was £2356 Is. 4d. in credit. The sale of current for the month produced £3346 12s. 9d.. The Taranaki Employers’ Asosciation advised that the Dominion drivers’ award would be cancelled as from February 9. The Waitara Borough Council wrote agreeing to meet a deputation from the board on March 8. Speaking on transport costs, Mr. Marchant said that with the imposition of more benzine taxation it was a question whether they could keep the heavier vehicles going. Mr. Moss asked the engineer for a return showing the amount they would have to pay as a result of the extra tax on benzine. He said that all their efforts at economy were being nullified by the extra taxes. They were now paying Is. a gallon benzine tax. The board’s vehicles must be doing approximately 100,000 miles per annum. It was a pity the electric vehicle was not developed more as it would pay the power board to run electrically-propelled vehicles. The engineer stated that the amount of benzine used by the board in 12 months was about 6000 gallons. With taxation amounting to Is. per gallon the total amount of tax paid annually was £3OO. Mr. Moss said that this was £6 aweek, and he objected to the additional tax. He moved that the board record its protest at the additional benzine tax in view of the additional cost to the board. This was seconded by Mr. Gernhoefer and carried. It was decided to send copies of the protest to the Prime Minister and the local members of Parliament.
