GOVERNMENT’S DIWIOUM'Y

VIOLENCE OF STRIKERS

ALL GARRISONS MOBILISED

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Ree. 10 p.m. London, Feb. 17. The situation in Roumania is apparently highly inflammable. It is stated there is a considerable Communist movement throughout the country which King Carol is determined to suppress. Fighting at Bucharest resulted in seven deaths and scores of injuries. A total of 750 strikers will be court-martialled. The most dramatic incident was a strike leader brandishing a blazing torch and trying to encourage his comrades, who were armed with steel rods, revolvers and other weapons, to face advancing troops, who fired a volley. The leader fell dead. All Roumanian garrisons are now mobilised on a war footing. The Government’s position is hourly .becoming more difficult. The police repulsed a Communist "t--tack on the Royal Roumanian train when it arrived with King Carol’s. mother, Queen Marie, from Belgrade. Fifty arrests were made. OUTBREAK AT SALONIKA. POLICE-COMMUNIST FIGHT. Rec. 10 p.m. Athens, Feb. 17. Police and Communists dashes occurred at Salonica to-day. Seven were killed and 100 wounded. The worst trouble occurred when the police raided a Communist club. The police were compelled to use revolvers, causing a rush to tbe staircase, which collapsed. Four were killed and 31 injured in a battle between soldiers and railway strikers at the railway workshops, where 4000 strikers had barricaded themselves as a protest against the Government’s refusal to abolish martial law. They also demand the release of over 1000 Communists who were arrested earlier in. the day in a round-up following King Carol’s decree declaring all Communist organisations illegal. The strikers surrendered and were arrested.
