THE LAST OF THE GIANTS.

This is the story of. the Last ef tire Giants, who certainly was a very remarkable person. , Now it appears that all the Giants were In a great state because the land was attacked by a terrible drought which lasted thirty-six months, .three weeks, and four days. During this time, a baby Giant was born and. named Pantagruel. Even Pantagruel’s father, who was quite five hundred years old, had never seen such a Strong baby, and he ordered four iron chains to be made so that the child might be chained into his cradle because he would not stay quietly. Pantagruel screamed because he was thirsty and did not like the drought, and he sounded like .a herd of elephants. And Pantagruel did not like chains, go he stamped the bottom out of his cradle with heel, and his nurses did not know what to. do when they saw him howling, on the floor all chained up to

pieces of oak tree. They coaxed him, and offered him beehives full of honey, but Pantagruel wanted to get rid of the chains, and honey didn’t help him. Then suddenly he discovered that he had a fist, and he struck the chains one awful blow which broke them into five thousand pieces. After that there was nothing to do but to let Pantagruel have his own way. And every Giant hoped' that he would grow up quickly, for such an enormous creature with the sense of a baby was too much for them to cope with. Fortunately Pantagruel grew quickly, and without learning he knew everything there was to know. All countries submitted to him. except one, so he collected an army and marched against this one. As they were marching, heavy rain began to fall, so Pantagruel just put out his tongue, which covered his whole army and kept it dry! As Pantagruel was able .to overcome everything by his great strength or his gieat knowledge, perhaps it was just as well that he was the last of his race.
