IMPORTED CIGARETTES DUTY

INCREASE FOR PROTECTION URGED. CONSIDERATIONS TO BE REVIEWED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, February 16. Further consideration of the duty recently imposed on tobacco was promised by the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes (Prime Minister) and the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister of Customs) to-day to a Nelson tobacco growers’ deputation which asked that the duty on imported cigarettes be increased in proportion to the increase placed on the New Zealand product. Mr. Coates said the Government was anxious to do nothing to jeopardise a New Zealand industry, and had taken all the factors into consideration when making the decision.
