The Inalewood Borough Council held its monthly meeting on Tuesday night. Present: The Mayor. Mr. J. Gibbs, Crs. F Spurdie, E. Crossman. E. H, Braybrooke, G. C. Tait, R. B. Young and L. ! Butler.

municipal conference was forwarded by the Newmarket Borough Council, which asked for the support of the Inglewood council:- “That in view of the disproportionate representation of smaller boroughs on the executive committee the constitution of the association be amended by making provision for a definite number pf seats on the committee for representatives of affiliated boroughs with a population of less than 6000.”

The council decided to support the remit.

An invitation was received for the Mayor to attend officers’ mess at the Waverley territorial camp of volunteers on February 16. A letter was received from Mr. S. G. Lovell stating that as he had sold his billiard tables he would not be applying for a license.

The. Inglewood Amateur Swimming Club was granted permission tp hold a carnival in the municipal baths on February 23. A letter-was received from the Inglewood Amateur Swimming Club asking that if possible the council grant the club a rebate on the charge for the Town Hall for the dance held after the recent carnival. Cr. Spurdie moved and Cr. Braybrooke seconded that on account of a recent decision of the Audit Department the council was unable to grant the rebate. Cr. Spurdie said that as the dance followed the carnival it had not commenced until about 11 p.m. and the club thought this might entitle it to the rebate. Cr. Crossman said that the swimming club had been offered an extra 2-hour but had not taken it The Mayor further explained that the Audit Department’s decision gave the council no other course than to refuse the rebate. ■ • z Mr. J. S. Connett, chairman of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association, waited on the council to ask it to rescind the resolution passed at a previous meeting whereby the collection of heavy traffic fees for farmers’ motor lorries was enforced. Mr. Connett said that country residents were already heavily taxed and he maintained that the rubber-tyred lorries which came under the regulation did less damage than the iron shod vehicles which went free. Also farmers carting their produce used the roads far less than those engaged in commercial carrying.' The law in this respect was not equitable. Mr. Connett 'said that when he approached Mr. Hunter, Commissioner of Transport, to ask that the Taranaki farmers be exempted, Mr. Hunter had said that it was impossible to exempt any one locality, but he would circularise the local bodies throughout New Zealand for opinions. Mr. Connett-said he had told Mr. Hunter that the Taranaki local bodies would be unanimous, and when New Plymouth, Waitara and Inglewood boroughs had voted against the exemption he had felt disappointed and. “let down.” He was sure if Taranaki were unanimous the fee would not be enforced. He was personally strongly of the opinion that the spirit of harmony should be fostered between town and country, although whether the council intended to penalise the farmers in its own district was its own affair. The Mayor said that he and the councillors were at all times anxious to fester goodwill between town and country. He said that iron, shod vehicles carrying a smell load doing more damage than motor vehicles with a large load was a good argument. After Mr. Connett retired Cr. L. Butler gave notice of motion that the previous resolution be rescinded. ,
