OPEN TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The United States Lawn Tennis Association, at its annual meeting here today, for the first time authorised an open tournament for professionals and amateurs to be held some time during the year at Philadelphia. The step arose from a warning that the Germantown Cricket Club, Philadelphia, one of the oldest tennis clubs in the country, would be compelled to disband unless it could augment its funds through some important tournament _ likely to bring considerable gate receipts. The association had long resisted the open idea.
