EXPORT OF HONEY

CONTROL OF MARKETING. BOARD ASSUMES POWERS. Control.of the export of honey is.being assumed this year by the New Zealand Honey Control Board. The board is taking this step under the Honey Export Control Act, 1924, in response to requests made by branches of the National Beekeepers’ Association. For'some tune there has been criticism of the system of marketing in Great Britain, individual exporters beipg permitted to operate under certain restrictions. Now the board will assume complete control, its policy following tire lines of the Dairy Produce Board. The board ’will control all supplies’ to Great Britain and Europe, : but there will be no interference with consignments of honey sent to other parts of the world. A depot will be established in London for packing honey and agents will sell the produce. The aim of the board will be to sell as much New Zealand honey as possible. Confidence -in the quality of the Dominion produce will be maintained and the best distribution at the best price will be sought. “We can always sell New Zealand honey at competitive prices, but we aim to do better than that,” said Mr. J. Rentoul, chairman .of the board, on Saturday. “New Zealand honey is prominent on the Home market, but Canada is making a strong bid for a large share of the trade and Canadian interests are receiving help from their Government.” Mr. Rentoul said the prospects for a good selling season this year were bright. During the last four years exporters had been embarrassed by targe holdings of previous seasons’ stock, but these were now practically cleared. Shipping of the crop would begin in April. Producers would gain the benefit of the 25 per cent, exchange and the preference secured at the Ottawa Conference should be a factor in restricting foreign competition.
