INGLEWOOD GENERAL NEWS

SUCCESSFUL YOUNG CYCLIST. WEEK-END CRICKET GAMES. The Inglewood grocers played a game of cricket against Waitui at Waitui during the week-end and won .by 63 runs to 45. A very enjoyable day was spent. Inglewood can boast a successful cyclist in Claude Burke, who has a fine record. In 74 starts he has gained 22 firsts, 18 seconds, 11 thirds and 12 fastest times. This record consists of 18 firsts in track races and 4 in road races, 12 seconds on the track and 6 on the road, 10 thirds on the track and 1 on the road, while all the fastest times were gained in road races. Burke was only 13 years of age when he was persuaded to take up racing by Mr. Harcourt Julian, late of Inglewood, and although he rode only twice during his first season, 1927, he gained a second and a third place at the Inglewood Athletic Sports. He did not take up riding really seriously until 1931, when, trained by Mr. M. Lawson, he developed great speed. He competed in all the open sports meetings and finished third in a New Zealand track championship. In that race he defeated such wellknown riders as W. Lamberton (Christchurch), L. Hill (Christchurch), Foote (Wellington) and W. Pratney (Auckland). Last year Burke went to work for Mr. C. Parker, the New Zealand fivemile track champion, and under his tuition he is improving with every race. In his last 12 starts he has gained five firsts, two seconds and two thirds, and was twice unplaced. Burke has a fine collection of trophies and his winnings at open sports meetings total over £5O. The Railway Hotel cricketers visited Waitara during the week-end to play a match against the Waitara club. They spent a thoroughly enjoyable day, refreshments being provided, and were victorious by 131 runs to 70. A return match is to be played at an early date.' The best scores for Inglewood were C. Twist’s 29, D. Parkin’s 56 (retired), F. Price’s 20 and S. Court’s 10. For Waitara Woodhouse made 35. McNab (4 for 4), Humphreys (1 for 2) and J. O’Neill (1 for 2) were the most damaging Inglewood bowlers.
