DEATH OF MOTOR-CYCLIST

SEQUEL TO A COLLISION. ACCIDENT AT STRATFORD. ■ Leo George Bocock, who was admitted to the Stratford Hospital late on Sunday evening ■ following a collision between the motor-cycle he was riding and a car driven by Mr. E. C. A. Gaw, Stratford, an account of which appeared in yesterday’s Daily News, succumbed to his injuries at 5.15 yesterday morning. The head injuries received in the collision proved, on subsequent examination, to be of an extremely critical nature, and little hope was entertained after midnight. Mr. Gaw was returning to Stratford from the direction of Midhirst and intended to turn westward up Pembroke Road towards his home on Brecon Road. He signalled his intentions to a car immediately behind. The car did not attempt to pass, and it was while Mr. Gaw was turning that the collision occurred. The motor-cyclist was ■ riding along Broadway in a northerly direction. The rider was thrown from his machine and subsequently conveyed to the Stratford Hospital by the second car. An inquest for the purpose of identification was opened before the district coroner, Mr. W. L. Kennedy, yesterday afternoon, when Mr. Bocock’s father, George Lewis Bocock, farmer, of Junction Road, Waipapa, gave evidence. CARDIFF DISTRICT NEWS. TENNIS AND CRICKET GAMES. The Cardiff Tennis Club on Saturday had a very enjoyable afternoon’s tennis in its match against Ngaere. The match could not be finished on account of rain. Some : men worked in the parks and three others were engaged cutting noxious weeds within the borough. Proposed New Footpath. Town Hall Repairs. To fix new piles where required, make a wall in front of the building and alter storm water pipes at the Town Hall will cost £l3 10s, according to a report submitted by the engineer to last night’s meeting of the works committee of the Stratford Borough- Council. Trespassers on Premises. Last night’s meeting of the works committee of the Stratford Borough Council received a complaint from a business man in Broadway to the effect that on' a number of evenings he had found persons loitering in and making use of' the yard at the rear of his premises. This occurred especially when entertainments were held in the municipal buildings, ■ entrance to the yard being gained through the back doors of the municipal building being left unlocked. Apart from the annoyance of these persons being in the yard, the writer pointed out that an opportunity to effect an entrance to the shop was thus given. He asked that in future the doors at the back of the municipal building be locked each night. The request was granted. Hamlet Street South.

The estimated cost of tar-sealing 17 chains of Hamlet Street South, Stratford, according to a report submitted to the borough works committee last night, is £69 15s. Reporting on the proposal the engineer mentioned that an inspection revealed that part of the street was in good order and could be tar-sealed with the addition of very litle more metal as far as Romeo Street.

Default of Ratepayers. Criticism of the attitude adopted by some ratepayers of refraining from paying rates when their positions were not as bad as those of some who had paid was voiced last night by members .of the Stratford Borough Council.. Discussion arose when a ratepayer, the owner of a number of sections, advised that he was short of cash and unable to pay. “He should sell some of his property and pay the rates,” Cr. A. H. Trotter stated. Outstanding Rates. “Why have we not received anything from this man?” Cr. A. H. Trotter teijuired at the Stratford Borough Council meeting last night when the matter of outstanding rates was being considered. The town clerk (Mr. P. Skoglund) stated that the debtor had been sued and explained that in some cases it did not pay to sell up a debtor because the mortgage on the property was greater than the value of the land.
