PETROLEUM.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—As Taranaki is particularly interested in the location of petroleum the writer, on reading some news to-day on the subject, thought that a few ideas from the “divining” point of view might be interesting to your readers. For some months past the writer has been giving his whole time and thought-to the location of minerals, especially gold. Some recent discoveries may be noted. A-party of seven working men were given a position on a high level alluvial area. It entailed driving a tunnel nearly 300 ft through solid rock. These men worked three shifts for eight weeks, and about a fortnight ago they got through. Everything was as stated, and to-day every available acre is pegged on the deposit for miles around. During Christmas week the writer visited an active reefing job. The best reef had broken about twelve months ago. The writer located the break and also where it took up again. This week news has come through that the reef is found as stated. I merely state these two cases of many, so that your readers may understand that knowledge is behind any statement made. Now, some months ago when out getting experience I came upon some petroleum indications. There were several little streams flowing in one direction. For about two hours I located, and noted the direction of a number of these little streams. They were all gravitating in one direction. It would have meant possibly several days to follow these streams till they joined, and this stream would then have had to be followed till it joined a bigger stream and so on till the main flow was located. Now it is very .likely that the search for oil in Taranaki is in just this position. Indications are seen by surface conditions, and bores are sunk at these points, but they are only on tributaries. It seems to me that if a thorough, survey were made of any district where petroleum is likely the main flow could be located.—l am, etc., GEO. -LIVINGSTON. Dunedin,. Feb. 9.
