MANAIA MUNICIPAL BAND

FUNDS FOR THE CONTESTA combined meeting of ladies and band members was held at Mr. Abbotts shop, Manaia, on Thursday evening- Present were Mesdames N. Davis, C. Abbott, D. Dick, J. .Borrie, J. Russell, J. Young, A. Andrews and D. Milverton, and Messrs L. Hughes (chairman), C. Abbott, M. Walker and F. Dick. _ • The chairman stated that the object of the meeting was to decide ways of raising funds to cover the expenses of the band at the forthcoming contest at Eltham. After a discussion it was decided to hold a euchre party and dance in the Manaia Town Hall on March 1. The matter of catering was left in the hands of the ladies. A number of prizes will be given to the winners of the ■euchre and of various novelty dances. The music will be supplied by a firstclass orchestra. Advice was received from Bandmaster Cosgrove that during the evening the band would render the selection which is to be played at the contest. The next combined meeting will be held on February 21. A donation of £1 was received from Mrs. W. T.' Wells towards the band fund, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded her. WHAKAMARA SCHOOL PICNIC. ENJOYABLE DAY SPENT. The Whakamara school picnic, to have been held at Mokoia beach last Friday, took place in the school grounds owing to showery weather in the morning. The weather cleared in the afternoon when games were played and sports held. Results of races are. Girls: Primers, E. Caldwell 1, B. After the sports afternoon tea and fruit concluded a very enjoyable day. Ice cream for the children was provided by the committee. Miss Madeline Barkla, who has been indisposed for the past few weeks, has gone to New Plymouth to recuperate. Mrs. Williams, who has been on a holiday visit to her parents at Ohakune, has returned home. Mr. R. Turner is spending a few days with Mr. S. P. Buckrell. Mrs. le Fleming and children have returned home from a holiday at; Auckland, having visited her parents there. NORMANBY SCHOOL PICNIC. ENJOYABLE DAY'AT OPUNAKE. . The annual picnic of the Normanby school was held at Opunake on Friday, when well over 100 children and a number of adults had a thoroughly enjoyable day at the beach. Much of the credit for the success of the event was due to Mrs. Gane and Messrs W. Bennett, W. Burton, C. Hardway, J. HoweGiles and T. Taylor. Donations of sweets were received from Messrs Galloway and Palmer, and of fruit from Messrs H. D. Hughes and H..
