ANNUAL BANKRUPTCY RETURN.

DIVIDENDS PAID IN 11 ESTATES.

Forty-eight bankrupt estates were dealt with by the Deputy Official Assignee at Hawera, Mr. C. O. Pratt, last year. Of this number 28 were banl?ruptcies during the' year, the other estates being , carried forward from the previous year. i The classification of bankrupts was:— Farmers 4, - sharemilkers 5, restauranteurs 4, fruiterers 3, decorator 1, labourers 3, contractors 2, cycle agent, mechanic, seedsman, fancy goods dealer, signwriter, dyer and cleaner one each. Of these three were working on wages, 21 were on their own account, and four were employers of labour. Out of the 28 fresh estates dividends were paid- in 11 cases, a total amount of £lO4l Bs. lid. being distributed. In the old estates, eight sets of creditors participated in, dividends amounting to £247 Os. 6d. , / • .

The costs of administering the various estates were: Government commission, £193 .6s. lid.;-solicitors’ fees, etc., £l7O 4s. 4d.; expenses of carrying on' businesses, £339 18s: 6d.; other charges, £316 17s. 4d. V

Mr, T.' Graham, of the staff of Smith’s Weekly, ' Sydney, 'is ' visiting Mr., and Mrs, L. C. Jurd, Hastings Road. Mr. T.. Taylor, secretary of, the Teachers’ Institute, returned to Normanby on Saturday from- Nelson, where he attended the. summer school, for teachers. The Rev.J. Watson, Normanby, is spending his annual vacation'- in New Plymouth. - GENERAL ITEMS. Dance at Oeo. A dance was field at Oeo hall on Monday night, and although the .attendance was not as large as. was expected, the evening passed pleasantly.. Monte Carlo dances were won. by Mr. E. Riley and Miss I. Mortensen, Mr. Manu and Miss Rangitawa. The music was played by Jack Hooker’s orchestra, with extras by Mr. Stewart Gordon, who also played saxophone solos. ’■''•

Better Fishing at Ohawe. Maoris at : the Ohawe beach have become enthusiastic during the, past week over tfie fishing possibilities. On three successive days.the launch Raurimu.was taken out,, resulting in catches of 40, 120 and 40 fish respectively. The catch was mamjy schnapper with a fair number of small sharks.

Hawera Men'for Military Camp. Three officers and 25 men from Hawera belonging to No. 4 Platoon of the Machine Gunners’ Company, and 15 men from Pa tea. are expected to attend the regimental camp at the Waverley racecourse from February 11 to 18. Twenty-four officers and 200 other ranks will be the total strength. of the unit. An advance party under the command of Major F., W. Whitcombe, Unit Quartermaster, • will- go into camp on Wednesday, February 8. Pay according to rank, will be given* for .the six days of camp. The. First Battalion, WellingtonWest Coast Regiment, will be in camp at the same time. Sunday, February 12, is to be visitors’ day. A sports meeting will. be held on the afternoon of Thursday,. February 16, and efforts are being made to organise a combined regimental dance on the night of Friday, February. 18. • ; : , : Useful Australian Hardwood.

A hardwood pole,: brought with several others from Australia by the late J. Livingston, at present forms a useful mast on which to swing the beam over an ensilage stack on the property of Mr.H. J. Finlay, Tokaora. Mr. Livingston’s original- intention was to bridge the Waingongoro River about a mile below the present bridge on the South Road. For 20 years the poles lay on the proposed site,, and for a further 20 years they were kept unused round the homestead, with the result that the mast as used at’ present is of an incredible iron 'hardness.

Dangerous Cliff Frontage. A slip estimated to have brought down at least 5000 yards of earth occurred last week hear the Hawera County Council’s Ohawe metal dump about a mile and ahalf' south ■of the Ohawe beach. The cliffs in that locality rise 'sheer from the water to a height on the' highest point of 265 feet; and being largely undermined be admired, if'at all, from a safe distance.’

Of. Interest to Racing Men. Racing, men visiting Hawera for the Egrfiont meeting which opens to-day have been .interested in. the JohnsonGood barrier. To most of the visitors it is something entirely new and they have inspected it closely.

The annual meeting of the Kakaramea Sports and Agricultural Association will be held in the Kakaramea hall on Wednesday, February 8, at 8 p.m. A race night dance’ will be held at the Rewa tea rooms to-night. Mr. Stewart Gordon, accomplished blind musician, will be in Mr. . Jack Hooker’s full, orchestra, which is making its initial appearance at Hawera.
