ON TARANAKI TRACKS

’ EGMONT PREPARATIONS INTERESTING TRIALS YESTERDAY. GLOWLIGHT’S SEVEN FURLONGS. AGA KHAN AND DAVISTOCK. There was plenty of work on the Hawera and New PJlymouth tracks yesterday morning when many of the horses for Hawera were given their final trials. Aga Khan, Davistock, Tentcall, March Alone and Attentive all galloped well at Hawera, while at New Plymouth the best effort was credited to Glowlight. The rain last night is sure to have a beneficial effect on the tracks, which should be in splendid order to-day. . Nearly all the work at New Plymouth took place before breakfast, when the plough was used in almost every case, Glen Vane was the first to work. He was sent twice round at an easy threequarter' pace and sprinted home over the last two furlongs. ' ■ ■ Refresher was allotted a' similar task. He is a very fit horse. Glowlight and Merry Way went seven furlongs. The. latter had the better of the start, but Glowlight joined after going two furlongs and was doing • it slightly the better at the end. The first two furlongs took 255., ’ the halfmile 505., and the full distance in Im. 30 2-ss. Glowlight did her task in good style and should run prominently tomorrow. Merry Way also did well and hung on surprisingly well. Arvada and Lucky Alice jumped off at the seven furlong post, but Arvada soon went io the front and, gradually increasing her lead, was four or five lengths in front at the finish. The last five furlongs took Im. ss. Arvada did her task in ah attractive" fashion, but Lucky Alice did not impress. Sparkling Mom appeared anxious to go faster over a couple of rounds of pace work. Cereal did strong work on the inside grass.

Royal Bengal was restricted tb steady pace work. After breakfast Headmistress and Amyril were given barrier practice. E. George’s trio, Lady Quex, Gibraltar and Easter Time, did good pace work. They will gallop this morning. Hawera Track Notes.

Although the outside of the course proper at Hawera was open for fast work all galloping was done on the plough. The strong wind did not affect the times.

As usual Aga Khan (Duncan) was sent on his own over seven furlongs. Running the first half-mile in 5145. and five furlongs in lm. 45., he completed the distance in lm. 31s.

La Crown has not been given regular exercise on the tracks for the past couple of days, but has been allotted strong jogging exercise in the saddling paddock. Tenacre was given solid three-quarter pacework. He is to start in the hurdles and possibly in the Whareroa Welter also.

Alone, Green Linnet (Duncan) moved; freely to register lm. 16 3-ss. for six furlongs, the first half-mile of' which was run in 50 4-ss.

Royal ; Papa and Shillong were both allotted three-quarter pace work. Tentcall (W. E. Pine) and Richfield (J. M. Pine) were sent seven furlongs together. The first furlong was run slowly, but then Tentcall went out to make the pace and was a couple of lengths in front after going half a mile in 51 2-ss. Although at this stage her rider lost an iron the Callaghan mare held her advantage for the remainder of the journey to occupy Im. 3145. for tire full seven. Tentcall worked very well, and but for the mishap would have improved on the time consider-.

ably. Richfield’s showing was not at all in accord with his smart gallop on Saturday morning.

, Calamine was a couple of rounds at half-pace. She will not take her place in the hurdles field,'but is to fulfil her Whareroa Welter engagement. Davistock (Grylls) showed to advantage from Peschiera (Flower) at the close of five furlongs in Im. 3 2-ss. Davistock worked very pleasingly and should give a good account of himself in whatever he contests on Wednesday. Peschiera also hit out well but would be benefited by a race.

An interesting trial was a bout between March Alone (Duncan), Chief Line (Weston) and Attentive (Feasey). Keeping together all the', way, they ran the first half-mile, in- 51s. and five in Im. 3s. At the straight entrance Attentive and March Alone drew out from their companion and could not be separated when the post was reached. They took Im. 31s. for the seven furlongs. Chief Line, finishing about three lengths behind, evidently found the task of conceding approximately two stone to his opponents just beyond' him. Attentive showed a big improvement on his Saturday ‘work out. March Alone ■ was responsible for another good effort and his Christmas racing has' evidently improved him. Icier (Duncan), Chief Link (Flower) and the Diacquenod youngster (Adlam) were sent out of the new starting barrier and left in good style. The Awapuni owner-trainer W. T. Bailey was at the lever and will officiate for the seven furlong events on race day. Although he now resides at Awapuni, Mr. Bailey is well known in this district. He has raced a good many horses at various times and. among others has had Bisogne, Royal Divorce and Lacham at the stud. The first of the visitors to arrive was Marjoram yesterday. The Hawke’s Bayhorses and all others from outside the province are expected to-day, while the majority of the Taranaki horses will probably come here before the races tomorrow morning. WAIROA RE-HANDICAPS DECLARED The following re-handicaps have been declared by Mr. H. Coyle for the first day of the Wairoa Racing Club’s meeting on February 2:— Te Kupenga Hack Handicap: Slippery 8.13. Ormond Handicap: False Scent 7.11.
