ACCELERATION TEST. MOTOR SPORTS AT STRATFORD. An acceleration test for motor-cars and cycles was held on Beaconsfield Road yesterday afternoon by the Stratford Motor Sports Club. The weather in the morning led many to believe that the test would not be held, and the attendance of the public suffered accordingly.' Those who did put in an appearance spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. . As the results show, Hignett was successful in taking the light car class from Sayers, though in an unofficial test afterwards Sayers covered the course in 25 4-55., an improvement of a second on the performance of the winning car. In the big car class, Carruthers needed to improve 2-ss. to win from Dixon, but after Dixon’s second run was made in 23 2-ss. he only succeeded in equalling the performance. Details are:— ’

ATHLETICS AT ELTHAM.

SPECIAL 220 YARDS EVENT.

A meeting of the. Eltham Amateur Athletic Club was held on Wednesday night, when arrangements were completed for the holding of electric light sports at Eltham-on February 2. The programme as drafted was approved. The events will commence at 7.15 p.m; with the javelin throw, and running events-will follow. The programme will consist of the' usual men’s and ladies’ running, cycle and field events. There will be, a special 220 yards invitation handicap in which the following will take part: 5. A. Black (440 yards N.Z. champion and record holder and Olympic representative), H. L. Thompson (N.P.), J. Kinsella (N.P.), T. K. Cambie (Hawera), S. Shore (Hawera). T. Kerr (Hawera), P. Rogers (Stratford), F. Young (Stratford) and M. Prince (Eltham).

Officials appointed were: Mr. A. Grant; manager, Mr. A. G. Whiting; assistants, Messrs. J. M. Bates, J. Ward, W. E. Rowlands, J. M. Stevens, M. Lindop; track judges, Dr. G. H. Thomson, Messrs. T. R. Overton, L. H. Clapham; field judges, Messrs. C. Dahl, T. Bennett, J. K. Laird; time-keepers, Messrs. J. Keilar, H. L. Kasper, C. J. Cummings; starter, Mr. L. Marter; assistant starter, Mr. J. Mathieson; competitors’ steward, Mr. A. Ware; announcer, Mr. J. S. King; announcer’s steward, Mr. G. Morton; press steward, Mr. S. McKay; gates, Mr, J, C. Walsh and staff; ladies’ steward Mrs. W. Meyer; handicapper, Mr. R. K. Thomas; secretaries, Messrs. J. Whiting, and H. N. Murray.

Arrangemets are well in hand for the installation of the. electric lighting of the track. Entries will close on Thursday with the secretary, Mr. J. Whiting, Eltham.

The club extended an invitation to Jenkins and Ogg, Wellington. The former is the centre champion sprinter and the latter the champion distance runner. Jenkins replied that he was unable to make the trip, but Ogg is prepared to come and will compete in the 440 yards and 880 yards. Jenkins at present holds the Wellington half-mile championship.

TENNIS CLUB DANCE AT ELTHAM.

MONTE CARLOS A FEATURE.

A dance held by the Eltham St. Joseph’s tennis club on Wednesday was highly successful, there being a large attendance of local residents and visitors from Hawera, Stratford, Kaponga and Opunake. Monte Carlo dances were a feature of the evening, four being held. The big prize went to Mr. R. Glentworth and Miss O. Dombroski and the others were won by Misses Willis and Zimmerman, Mr. R. Jackson and Miss May Gower and Mr. Archer and Miss L. Dombroski.

Jack Hooker’s orchestra played the music for modern and old-time dances and extras were given by Mr. J. Sheehy. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs J. and M. Sheehy. GENERAL ITEMS. To Help Upkeep of Baths. There was an informal gathering of members of the Stratford school committee and of the Stratford Swimming Club on Wednesday night when the swimming club offered to donate to the baths committee half the proceeds of future swimming carnivals towards the upkeep and improvement of the baths. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. A. E. Moss, in accepting the offer, said the committee was very glad to see co-operation between the two bodies.

Easy Way to Learn Swimming. Those who are not able to swim will appreciate the installation at the Stratford school baths of a device to assist learners. It consists of a taut wire running the length of the baths on which runs a pulley. A canvas belt, attached to the pulley by a strap, supports the beginner so that he can concentrate on the swimming movements without being afraid of sinking. PERSONAL ITEMS. Archdeacon J. D. Russell, Oamaru, who has been the guest of Mrs. J. C. McDowall, Stratford, returned to the south yesterday.- morning.
