AUSTRALIA OUT FOR 193

ENGLISHMEN WIN TEST BY 338 WOODFULL CARRIES BAT FOR 73 COLLAPSE OF LAST FOIL LATSMEJi . J' „ - ■ L. ■!' '"!-■■■ . 11 ' t By Telegraph—Pre«i Assn.—Copyright. Received 10.30 p.m. Adelaide, January 19. ENGLAND beat Australia in the third cricket test by 338 runs, the Australians’ second innings score totalling 193, making their grand total 415 to England’s 753. England won the first test at Sydney and Australia the second at Melbourne. The fourth test will be played at Brisbane on February 10 and the last at Sydney on February 23. The weather was sultry tp-day and barely 5000 people attended. The wicket wore splendidly. A thunderstorm broke shortly after the close of the match. The Australian cap-tain, Woodfull, had a fine reception after carrying his bat for 73.

BOWLERS’ UPPER HAND FIELD MASSED ON LEG SIDE. WOODFULL OUTLASTS HIS TEAM. Larwood opened with an off field. Woodfull reached 51 with a neat stroke to square leg. Ten runs came off the Notts man’s first two overs. Allen was bowling consistently well. Larwood then massed a leg field, Richardson swinging one safely for four. He also got a crisp shot for four past point off - Allen in the next over. Verity came on at 148 and bowled with faultless length and Woodfull had to play every ball. Hammond was also called on. Woodfull reached 51 by a superlative mid-on shot. Verity perturbed Richardson; one ball flew .over the stumps resulting in “a coat of varnish” bye. When the South Australian reached 21 he fell into Larwood's leg trap, popping one past forward short leg, where Alien made a fine ca.tch low down. Richardson hit three, fours but. did. not play with his usual dash. Larwood’s average was now three for 56. ,He had a circle of five men round Richardson. Woodfull, who had been cautious of the trap, was now partnered by Grimmett. The captain got a beautiful midon three and then lost the slow' bowler, Allen knocking down his leg stump when he had reached six. Allen at this stage had two for 45. Wall lasted only five balls from Allen, who clean bowled him. Woodfull, now accompanied by O’Reilly, went to 68 with a fine leg glance. O’Reilly nonplussed Larwood by slamming him through cover for four, but this was his last stroke. Larwood’s next ball sent his leg stump hurtling. Ironmonger had a short reign. Allen clean bowling him. The innings lasted 235 minutes, England . eing 338 ahead. Details:— ' ENGLAND. ' First Innings.
