SWIMMING AT WAITARA
SUCCESSFUL EVENING CARNIVAL
TARANAKI 440YDS. CHAMPIONSHIP.
The Taranaki 440yds. championship event was the main attraction at the Fitzroy-Waitara Club’s annual swimming carnival at the Waitara school baths last night. The evening was filled with handicap events. There were 11 entries m the quarter mile event and one competitor stood down to reduce the number to a twoheat field. The swimming of heats and final on the same night was not approved and the final will be contested by six swimmers at Hawera on February 2. Finishes were excellent throughout the evening, there being a particularly good race in the final of the mens 50 yards handicap, five swimmers touching within a foot. . . » The carnival was controlled by Waitara officials assisted by one or two Fitzroy members, and there were swimmers present from all New Plymouth clubs, Inglewood, Stratford and Hawera. Alleman 3; "18s * 440' yards Taranaki Championship:— First heat: H. St. George (F) 1, C. Maclean (F) 2, C. Parker (F) 3. Also started: C. Campbell (F) and F. Harlow (F). R. Clayton (F) was scratched owing to there being one entry too many for two heats. The race developed into a duel between St. George and Maclean, with Campbell, Parker and Harlow spaced out. The field was an all-Fitzroy one. With 14 lengths gone Campbell pulled out and Parker was 40 yards behind. Over the final 50 yards St. George sprinted and beat Maclean by three yards. Parker was two laps behind and Harlow two laps further back. The time was 6m. 41 2-55., which was slow. Second heat: A. J. Ryan (H) 1, J. Blyth (H) 2 A. Robson (S) 3. Also started: R. Girling (S). I. Jobson did n'ot start, leaving a field ,of four. The four covered the first 220 yards at equal pace but with 100 yards to go Ryan and Blyth were together 10 yards ahead of Robson, with Girling 20 yards further back. Robson caught up slightly on the leading pair in the last lap, in which Ryan drew ahead slightly to win from Blyth by inches. Robson was five yards back third and Girling arrived 10s. later. OLD BOYS SURF TEAMS.
The selection of Old Boys teams for the Weston Cup four-man Taranaki lifesaving championship has been made as follows: A team—Anthony (beltman), Gayton (patient), Allen (linesman), Weston (reelman). B team: Perkins, Des Forges, Rimmington, Insull. In the eight-man life-saving event, the Old Boys team will be: Weston (captain), Perkins (support), Anthony (beltman), Rimmington (patient), Allen, Des Forges and Insull (linesmen).
