WHANGAMOMONA WEEDS.
(To the Editor.
Sir,—l notice the question of noxious weeds has again caused a stir in this district A few months ago I was thinking of purchasing a property a few miles from the township of Whangamomona, but I changed my mind. Although not a landowner I-have become interested in this weed trouble and would like to a?k a few questions. Were the Government officials who made a tour of inspection last week escorted by those who have been doing a good deal of complaining to all the farms on which noxious weeds are growing, or just over the properties of a selected few? What about the ragwort that is blooming beautifully on the Government’s Whangamomopa demonstration farm, and the blackberry that is full of fruit on Government property about three miles from the township? When the inspector of noxious weeds says such are cut to his satisfaSthm, should not the matter end there? When ope learns of the; position of some of the. farmers in this district can one wonder if they lose heart and talk about walking off their farms? I know of a case (and no doubt there are many others) where the .Government is taking all the money received for any stock sold; as well as a third of the cream cheques and yet expects the farmer to pay rates, insurances, taxes and live , and still have money left to work the farm. Is this how the Government expects to keep the man on the land? In these- days of depression we should all try to help one another, and if the weeds pre such a worry to some would it not be a kindly action on their part if they helped their less fortunate neighbours to clear their properties?—l am,' etc., SQUARE DEAL/
