NEW ZEALAND’S SPIRIT
TRIBUTE TO THE PEOPLE. A. tribute to the way the people are facing the difficulties confronting them was paid by the Prime Minister, the Rt.’ Hon. G. W. Forbes, when replying to the toast of Parliament at- the bowlers’ social on Saturday evening. “After 25 years; I want to say that I have still a very genuine belief in the New Zealand Parliament,” said Mr. Forbes. “The way in which a country meets its problems • depends on the character of its people, and it is the people of a country which enables it to overcome its difficulties. One of the characteristics of the British people is its staying power. Every thoughtful man realises that the world is passing through very difficult times at present, but they can only be met by a cheerful spirit. The man we can respect is the man who has troubles and can face them with a smile. We have difficult problems, and we can only deal with them to the best of our ability. We have to depend on the assistance and co-operation of the people of the country. As far as the people of New Zealand are concerned, I feel that they are prepared to face the difficulties, and face them without whinini?.”
