UNEMPLOYED TEACHERS

THE POSITION IN TARANAKI ■ WORK UNDER RATIONING SCHEME. SIXTY NOT PROVIDED FOR SO FAR. Including 25 students who have just completed their course at training college there are 89 unemployed teachers in Taranaki who will come under the rationing scheme, At yesterday’s meeting; of the Taranaki Education Board 24 of them were given appointments for the first term of the coming year as probationary assistants in various schools in the Taranaki education district. In selecting the teachers for those appointments the teachers* selection committee took into consideration first those teachers who had received the least work under the rationing scheme last year. Those who had received appointments only during the last term of . last year were reappointed to the schools at which they then taught so tHat they would commence the year with some knowledge of the requirements of the school and thus as far as possible eliminate the disorganisation caused by too frequent changes of teachers. Also where possible teachers were appointed to schools near-, est their home. It was stated that at the next board meeting in February it was hoped to make five more appointments as additional assistants at various schools where the roll number in the new year riiowed that such appointment was warranted. That will still leave 60 unemployed during the first term, though no doubt some of those will receive temporary work as relieving teachers.
