WAITARA BOROUGH AFFAIRS
•=. RECOATING MAIN STREET. . MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL* The monthly meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr, J. Hine) presided over Crs. E. A. George, H. Wakely, T. Wilson, H. Spurdie and W. J. Reeves. The Mayor reported, that Mr. C. F. Dowsett had in hand the recoating of the main road through the borough. It was decided to put Mr. Dowsett in charge of its later supervision. The secretary of the beach improvement society brought to the council’s notice the need for a larger water main to serve the tea kiosk and cottages on the west beach. The position was the same everywhere in Waitara, said the Mayor. He was looking forward to the time when the beach leases would lapse as the area had never been intended as a permanent residential district, which it now was. The society will be notified that the council cannot increase the main. Lengthy correspondence was received from the Municipal Association concerning the annual conference. It was decided that the council should not be represented in view of foe financial posi- ’ tion. The Auckland Suburban Local Bodies’ Association asked the council’s support of a protest against proposed amendments to the Municipal Corporations Act to facilitate amalgamation of boroughs. The council thought that although the matter was not one that concerned the borough of Waitara, it would oppose the amendments regarding amalgamations on principle. The electrical engineer reported that the' Undertaking had operated satisfactorily, no trouble having been 'experienced. The units registered during December were 30,621, compared with- 29,737 for December, 1931. During the holidays the streets had been illuminated with coloured lights. It had been arranged to- keep the general street lighting in operation till daylight. Concerning the resolution of the previous meeting in regard to the disconnection of consumers of electricity more than a . month in arrears, Cr. Spurdie said that although he knew the decision had been made he would have liked to see further grace given.. .The Mayor and Cr. George, pointed out that the resolution could not be rescinded. The discussion lapsed. The overseer reported that six water mains, two fire plugs and- a valve had been repaired. Two water services had been laid and one applied for. Maintenance work had been done at the intake. Six motor driving licenses and two building permits were issued. • The foreman reported that the staff had been occupied in general work. The streets were clear of stock, reported the ranger.
