WELCOME VISITORS
To-day the province of Taranaki will welcome Sbme members of the farming community in Victoria who are making a short visit to the Dominion. It is unfortunate that a longer portion of their stay could not have been spent in Taranaki, as in many respects this province has much to show that is of peculiar interest to the visitors. Many of them are coming from the more closelysettled parts of the State of Victoria and are engaged in the dairying industry there. As in New Zealand, the dairying industry has greatly increased in importance in Victoria during the post-war years. Ten or twelve years ago the Dominion led the way in organisation of the industry, factory equipment, pasture management and selection in minting herds.. To-day much of that leeway has been overtaken in Victoria, and the visit to New Zealand has been partly due to the desire to see in what ways the Victorian industry can be further benefited by the adoption of methods which obtain in the Dominion. In regard to climate and rainfall all the Australian States have their own difficulties to overcome, but-even in this regard the Dominion may have something to show in the way of conservation of fodder and the management of pastures in order to counteract an unreliable rainfall. Whether they come as inquirers or as holiday-makers the visitors may be assured of a hearty welcome in Taranaki. The interchange of views and experiences which is only possible when personal contact is made should be of service to the dairy industry on both sides of the Tasman Sea. Victoria and New Zealand have a common desire to see prices for dairy produce return to a figure that will at least enable the producer to make a living, and it may be that personal discussions will show means of reducing costs and improving quality, which seem the only methods by which the industry can return to prosperity.
