IN BATHS AND SURF

CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT WEEK review of the possibilities, title-holders of taranakl

(By

"Beltman.”)

After the carnivals that have been held in Taranaki it is now possible to. take stock of the swimmers that have shown promise. The old die-hards are still racing as well as ever, Particularly. St George and Ryan, while there are one or two more who will probably betaking a prominent part in the logger events. Jobson (Hawera). is reported to be a likely contender for distances up to the quarter mile, whil Girhn. (Stratford) is due .to make his P re^ n “ felt. His style seems as if it would be better suited to the longer distances than, the 50yds. and 100yds., which are all that are available at carnivals. One would like to see him in the more buoyant water of the New Plymouth baths on Saturday night against St George and Ryan in the mile championship. G. S. Anderson has not been in evidence very much this season. He is living at Patea but he may be 'able to viiit New Plymouth for the championships next week. George Harrison (Opunake) is another who has not appeared this season., As holder of the unofficial 220yds. record his presence would be desirable.

Swimmers of Promise. There are several others in Taranaki whom coaching and * urtl ’ er practice would do incalculable benefit. R. Winter (Inglewood), R. Perkins, H. Anthony, R- Gayton, J. Ryan and E. Meredith (New Plymouth), •F. Harlow, C. Campbell, C. Maclean, C. barker (Fitzroy) and W. Wright (East End) are all first-class material for the senior middle-distance events, while m the shorter races there are. G. Beaven, K. Shaw, H. Watkins (New Plymouth), A. Henderson and R. Williams (East End), F. Trueman, A. Webb, G. Fowler and R. Gardiner (Fitzroy), who are inside the 30sec. marx. .... ■ ’ With all these names to compare witn the former dearth of swimmers of the lane standard it seems safe to say that Tarapaki swimming is improving gradually. -The province has a "learn-to-swim” week for the children who are not at home in the water, and the great benefits reaped therefrom are too wellknown' to- need comment. Would not the clubs perhaps improve their stand-ard-if an organised “learn-to-swixn. pro- '• perly” week were held? “Beltman knows his own swimming would be . betr ter for coaching. The idea is commended to the clubs’ committees and to" the combined clubs’ committee. Busy Week.

The next seven days are going to be busy ones for Taranaki swimmers. Tonight the Fitzroy club will hold a carnival at Waitara for the benefit of the Waitara branch, the programme -including the quarter-mile provincial championship. The’ Fitzroy club’s annual New Plymouth carnival is set down for Saturday, when the mile championshipwill be decided. The carnival will be in the nattw of a try-out for the Taranaki championships on W ednesday next, and to that end the programme includes a 331- 3yards scratch race.and a ladiesbreaststroke event. A new method of judging the diving is also to be adopted. The first life-saving of the season will be staged at Opunake at the week-end, the chief event being the provincial four-man : alarm championship for the Weston Cup. On the following Wednesday will be Taranaki championships, which will be reviewed when the-en-r tries are published.
