FRENCHMEN OFFER TO PAY.
SHARE OF DEBT INSTALMENT.
Calcutta, Dec. 20.
Twenty Frenchmen have written to the American Embassy, regretting that the Chamber of Deputies refused to pay the war debt instalment, and enclosing postal orders to cover their share of the instalment, which averages 12 francs (just about 2s), calculated on a population basis.
The American Ambassador, Mr. W. E. Edge, has returned the money, expressing gratitude for the appreciation of America’s position.
