DAWSON FALLS NOTES

NEW YEAR HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES. The weather at the mountain has been good during the holidays, but although there was no rain, some of the days were overcast with clear nights. There has been a large number of visitors and many have gone long walks and ascents of the mountain. The cottages and camp house have been consistently occupied. A party of ladies under Miss Niven, Wellington, has been staying in the camp house and has had many long expeditions to their credit. Besides doing all the local walks they have made the ascent of Fantham’s Peak and the mountain as well as visiting North Egmont house and Bell’s Falls. Many have made the ascent of the mountain lately. These include Mr. Bennett and party (Wellington), Mr. H. Hughson and party (Opunake), Mr. C. McAllister and party (Stratford), Mr. H. Snowdon (Manaia) and Mr. Chamberlain and party (Wellington). About 35 cars visited the house on Sunday, and all visitors enjoyed a beautiful day for picnicihg and doing the bush walks as well as climbing. A large party of. Y.M.C.A. boys passed through on Monday. They had previously walked from the north house and were continuing to Stratford via the Stratford house. On the same day Mr. C. McAllister and party did the trip to Lake Dive. On New Year’s Eve a successful social evening was held in the camp house. With Mr. McKenzie as master of ceremonies, games and dancing were enjoyed and items were given during the evening by Mrs. Murphy and Miss Eileen Hughson. Community singing was led by Miss Hughson. At midnight the-New ,Year was welcomed appropriately. Dance music was played by Mrs. Marsh, who was cheered for her good services during the evening. Visitors to the hostel have included Mr. and Mrs. T. Jordan (Masterton), Mr. and Mrs. Gunn (Eastbourne, Wellington), Dr. and Mrs. Hardwick-Smith (Wellington), Miss Hardwick-Smith (Wellington), Miss Settle (Auckland), Misses, Wood and Davidson (Wellington), Misses Thornton (Wellington), Mr. and Mrs. Meade Goodloe (bos Angeles, U.S.A.), Mrs. and Miss Harvey (Waverley), Miss Trevithick (Auckland), Miss Heighten (Wellington). Mr. Bennett and party have been in the top, cottage, while Mr. R. Hughson and party have, occupied the middle cottage.
