London gave a joyous welcome to 1933. Restaurants, theatres and cinemas were crowded, and the usual pilgrimage was made to St Paul’s, despite drizzling rain from 11 o’clock. The fact of New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday led to an earlier termination of festivities. Gales of great velocity swept- many parts, accompanied by torrential rains. Houses were flooded, and ships damaged.
