FINE THERMAL DISPLAY

MUD THROWN 50 FEET HIGH.

Rotorua, Jan. 2.

Visitors at Whakarewarewa were fortunate in witnessing an exceptionally good display of thermal activity. About mid-day a mud-hole in the vicinity of the Spout Baths blew out and a column of steam and mud was thrown up to a height of at least 50ft. The activity continued for at least half an hour.

A peculiarity of this particular mud hole is that it becomes active only once a year and generally at about this period. The older Maoris keep watch for the activity and they have named it the “New Year’s Greeting.” The better-known geysers at Whakarewarewa have not shown any unusual activity during the holiday season.
