COMPANY SUES ACTRESS
ALLEGED BREACH OF CONTRACT.
REFUSAL TO MAKE PICTURE.
By Telejrraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Los Angeles, Jan. 2.
A suit for nearly 200,000 dollars damages was filed in Federal Court here to-day against Marlene Dietrich by Paramount Studios charging her with breach of contract. The action charges that she refused to work under the terms of a 4000 dollar per' week contract and asks that she be enjoined from working for another producer. ~ Emanuel Cohen, vice-president in charge of production, explaining the cause of action, said that 'since completing her last picture the actress had been paid 4000 dollars weekly on a contract expiring on February 19. Plans were made for another picture. With production arrangements complete, hs said, Miss Dietrich arbitrarily refused to go ahead. She now refused to face the cameras and requested the cancellation of her contract for its few remaining weeks.
The casts of the preparation of any picture were amongst the greatest items and the cancellation of the contract now would mean that Paramount would not get the Dietrich picture it had already paid her for, and by reason of her refusal the company had been burdened by an accumulated loss of over 200,000 dollars.
