FRANKLEY ROAD NOTES

On Saturday, December 17, the Frankley Road Sunday school held their annual picnic and prize-giving, the weather being perfect. The picnic began at about 9 o’clock in the morning, and the time was spent in playing cricket and running races. Mr. Fleming took charge ot the. sports and every child won a prize. At 12 o’clock lunch was served, - Mrs. Fleming, Mrs. L. E. Smith, Mrs. Brookes and Mrs. Tancred attending to the catering. Misses T. Sadler and T. Goodacre decorated a Christmas tree, from which Santa Claus, who mysteriously appeared over the brow of a hill, gave a book, a balloon and a bag of lollies to every small child present, as well as visitors. Everyone of the 48 scholars on the roll received a prize, together with six who have gone to Midhirst, two who have gone to Hamilton, and several local removals.

Special prizes were awarded as follow: —Dux of the school Jean Hughes; Uncle Lett's competition, Jean Hughes; Auckland'-Sunday School Union Scripture .Examination, Jean Hughes; special prize donated by Mr. H. D. Mullon, Jean Hughes; certificates, Laurence Smith, Ernest Smith,. Eunice Brooke, Jackie Wooler, Ola Baird, Thelma Goodacre, Maurice Shepherd, Lionel King, as' well as the teachers Messrs. Gray, Geo. Smith, R. A. G. Oliver, L. D. Mullon, G. P. S. Smith, Miss T. Sadler and Mrs. L. E. Smith. Prizes by Scripture Gift Association, Doreen Fleming, Lottie Sadler, Marjorie Sadler, Leslie Eva, Jean Hughes, Olive Shaw, Jack Shaw, Eulie Sturgeon and Ruth Blizzard. Mr. G. P. S. Smith, superintendent, read his financial statement and report, which were published some time ago, and he expressed thanks to Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Smith for use of their shed and room for Sunday school purposes, and to Mr. and Mrs. Okey for shed for Sunday school lessons, to Mrs. and Mr. Brooke for use of room for evening services, and to Mr. and Mrs. Fleming for the use of their premises for day and night services. He apologised for the absence of the Rev. F. A. Parry, and Rev. R. B. Gosnell. A telegram was received conveying good wishes from Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Mullon, who have moved to Palmerston North. The children were given a lolly scramble, and some of the senior, girls went for a walk over Mr. Goodacre’s farm. For two years now Mr. Goodacre has lent the Sunday school his paddock for their picnic. Thanks are due to him. Afternoon tea was partaken of, and the boys had another game of cricket after which all went home. Farmers are extra busy just at present trying to finish their haymaking before Christmas. Luckily for them all the weather has been beautiful.
