FROM TARANAKI TRACKS

AGA KHAN IMPRESSIVE LADY QUEX’S FAST HALF MILE. TIGERISM RUNS SOLID MILE. • Though not perhaps as lively as on, Tuesday, there were some good trials at Hawera and New Plymouth yesterday morning, when horses for Ellerslie, Awapuni and the Taranaki meetings were galloped. At New Plymouth Lady Quex and : Tigerism did best, while at Hawera Aga Khan and • Richfield were responsible for pleasing efforts. At'New Plymouth there was not a great deal of fast work, surprisingly few of the horses being galloped. The plough was used in all cases.

J. L. Gray was out early and the first of his team to work was Palace, who strode over seven furlongs in -good style in Im 35 l-ss. He is in good order and will contest the Hack Cup on Monday. Arvada and Lucky Alice did steady pace work. Both these two are looking well and should pay their way during the holidays. The Auckland Cup candidate Tigerism hopped off at the three furlong peg and, assisted by* Royal Bengal over the first part and Manly over the last seven, went slightly over a mile and a-quarter. . . The last. mile , took.. Im 46s and the seven furlongs lm 3215. As usual he worked well and was,- finishing on. H. Johnson has given him a' very thorough, preparation and he will not be disgraced on Boxing Day. _ Foulwind was doing better than Rerer atu at the conclusion of five furlongs in JLm.?4s. Rereatu has displayed plenty of pace in his races but jloes not stay on too well. ■ ■ - Refresher, Glen Vane, Matorm, Lady Vane and/.Haulbowline, were, restricted to pace work;« . After breakfast Merry Way and Glow-, light?went once, round at an easy threequarter pace. Both these fillies have muscled up well of late and should acquit themselves well next , week; i Orapai worked lazily • over- a couple of circuits. He looked a picture. Once .again Lady Quex and Cereal provided the gallop; of the morning oyer half a mile. Thereiwas a-little muddling at the . start, where Cereal dwelt slightly, but -he soon rushed past Lady. Quex,. who had been steadied slightly to wait for bim. He led past the,two furlong post in 255, - but then McLeod, on Lady Quex started to rid the mare in earnest and, responding splendidly, she had the Pleasure of Cereal 100 yards from home and beat him home, comfortably in ,48. 4-ss. Lady Quex’s' finishing . effort-was certainly impressive, and it will come as a big surprise should she fail to. go well at Awapuni. Cereal also shaped well, especially as he is not quite at home on the plough. Though Gibraltar still appears tied up behind he is. working well enough and was on terms with Easter Time at the conclusion of five furlongs in lm 21s, the last three, taking 375. Easter Time was going very easily at the end and could have improved on this time. The Auckland trainers W. Goscomb, A. Rhodes and J. W. Cathro arrived with their-teams yesterday—ten horses in all. Both, track and weather at . Hawera were ideal for yesterday morning’s work. Most of . the galloping was done on the plough, although two or three went on the outside of the'course proper. .. Aga Khan (Flower) and Awaken (Duncan) were sent over a mile. The f ormer was. always. going more easily than his companion. and could have improved considerably, on .the half, length advan-’ tage hfe held at the finish in lm 455. They ran , the. <irst, half mile in 51Js, fiv,e in lm 3 3-5 s and six in lm 17 l-ss. Awaken went well but had no chance with her opponent, who seems to’be ahorse aW the average. ' ''?■■• ? ;; No Doubt was trotted .on the two-year-old track. Karanga (Brough) slipped over five furlongs alone in lm 4s. .. .... .. .... : Lady Bent and Tdntcall were allotted light exercise on the inside plough. Tenacre (Vaughan) ? gained an advantage at the start of a six furlong bout with' Chief Line (Duncan) and Attentive (Weston) and held it all the way to register lm 19s. Tenacre has been working pleasingly of late and should give a, good account' of himself at Manawatu. As usual W; Bowden will be ,in the saddled • ?’”'■ ' " T On the outside of the course proper Da Crown ran the last , six of seven furlongs in lm 21s. - . Weatherzane was exercised on the two-year-old track. ■ ; The pace was very fast over the early part when Richfield (W. E. Pine) and Orbv’s Choice (Flower) were associated over seven, furlongs. They left the first half, mile behind in 49 Is but then slowed up for. Richfield to come home three lengths in front. Royal Papa (J. M. Pine) occupied 52js for half a mile on the outside of the course’ proper. ' Green Linnet (Weston) and March Alone (Duncan) were always together over six furlongs. Green Linnet is still rather robust and her races at New Plymouth will benefit her. Santanet, Goldzone, Calapat and the Cleasanta filly were all given light pace work on the inside. plough. Icier, the Diacquenod youngster, and tke Weathervane gelding were given pace work in company on the outside (main) (Grylls) and Miss Cavendish (Coyle) moved smartly over five furlongs, there being little between them when the winning post was reached m lm 3 l-ss. Both are working well and should be prominent over the circuit. As usual Golden Hair (Grylls) began more quickly than Rapper (W. E. Pine) over half a mile on the course proper. Rapper started to make up leeway at the straight entrance and appeared likely to beat the filly home, but she hung on well and was still three-quarters of a length to the good at the finish in Mj-s. This pair are both hitting out well. Rapper may need a little experience but Golden Hair has only to run up to her track form to trouble the opposition at. Manawatu on Boxing Day. Davistock (W. E. Pine) had a length to spare from Little Doubt (Coyle) at the close of seven furlongs in lm 31 2-ss. The first to work after breakfast was Divola (W. E. Pine), who was sent half a mile the reverse way round. Reeling off the first two furlongs in 24s dead she slowed up over the next to record 5215. She is not in at New Plymouth but figures among the Stratford nominations. 1 Copey, Peschiera and Constant bun were allotted .light exercise. An interesting visitor to the track was Havering, who ran home the last half mile of a round of pace work in 54 l-ss. He looks well but moved rather scratchily. In his gallop he was. ridden by J. Glenn, who. will probably have the mount on the Quin Abbey gelding at Manawatu, where he is to be sent for the second and third days. The Ruapapa roan (Brough) just shaded Cox’s Diacquenod gelding (Mills) in a two furlong sprint compassed in 24 4-ss. ■ " , The Tiger hit . out boldly in pace work on the inside plough. .Carfex left for'Auckland yesterday in the care of J. ■ Cahill, and is the first Hawera horse to use the new line to Auckland. He has been working particularly well during the last week or so and, ridden, by K. Voitre, he must go well, on Monday. 'After competing at Ellerslie on the first and second days

he will probably return to run in the Stratford Cup, in which he is handily weighted with 7.4. Riding engagements announced for Hawera horses and horsemen at New Plymouth include the following:— W. E. Pine: Tentcall, Calamine (Christmas Handicap). V. Weston: Green Linnet? Moatoa. K. Grylls: Miss Cavendish, Little Doubt. ■ ! G. Duncan: Awaken, Easter Time, Chief Line, Attentive. W. B. Flower: Rapper, Lady Bent. J. M. Pine: Royal Papa, La Grown, Lady Lulu, Gold Gleam. , As yet no one has been definitely engage to ride The Tiger, ; disc/-’ ’’ - ■-
