TRAINING BOYS FOR SEA
IMPORTANCE TO NEW ZEALAND. GOVERNMENT ASKED TO ACT. “The existence of a number of unemployed sailors and firemen and'the constantly diminishing volume of coaS.tal traffic iri particular presents special difficulties in absorbing New Zealand ‘ boys in the sea-faring occupation,” states the report of Messrs. S. G. Smith and A. E. Ansell, M.sP.,-‘ on the boy unemployment problem. Recognising this, the committee points out the importance of ■ a seagirt country training a proportion of its youth' for sea-faring occupations, and suggests that as British ships carry large consignments of - New Zealand produce, the companies concerned, might be- ; induced to include several New Zealand boys in the ships’ complements. The report recommends that the Government consult with. tile British i shipping companies with that object, and that a difficulty now experienced ‘.of crews being'paid off for a month'while in Britain may be overcome in respect of these youths by the Government considering some small measure of financial assistance to them during that period.
