SINGLE MEN’S CAMP
KOHURATAHI ESTABLISHMENT. SET ,F-CONTAINED COMMUNITY. “They are doing excellent work, as good as a regular road-making gang,” said Mr. A. J. Howley,- Public Works Department overseer, when a representative of the News was being taken over toe relief camp at Kohuratahi recently. The camp is located about six miles along the Kohuratahi Valley Road-. Over two miles of metal have .been placed on toe road, while formation has been done for four miles further. The work is being done on modern lines, and the survey work personally supervised by the overseer.- . * - . ■ .•. The camp is a model one, being a home away from home. It is equipped with a bakehouse, kitchen, dining room, dairy, shower bath, iron-roofed -tents complete with a fireplace in each, bunks, smithy shop, piggery (complete with young wild pigs), fowl rup, house cow, and recreation paddock. . It has also a splendid garden of some two acres, and potatoes, peas, beans, beet, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, and other vegetables are growing luxuriantly. That Mr. Howley is a thoroughly capable overseer is. evidenced by the general satisfaction of toe men, and the fine work they are doing, although the pay is a pittance compared with that given to regular workers. Close by the camp, which is situated on a level piece of fertile ground, is the Waipuna River, and the falls provide an excellent swimming pool. Through the courtesy, of the Whangamomona County Council the camp is connected by telephone to Kohuratahi. The settlers along the Kohuratahi Road are delighted at toe prospect of having a good surface on the road after years of mud and hoggings. 3 ' •
